Inauguration and Vaccine Quickies

Happy Inauguration Week, US friends! I hope you took a little time to take a breath before getting right back to work.

Amanda Gorman. Amanda. Gorman. I didn’t know the inauguration could be “won” but she won it.

Like many others, I greatly enjoyed the fashion choices, particularly Dr. Biden’s sparkly blue coat that is from a clothing line named after a group of galaxies! (Learn more about the Markarian Chain shown in the featured image above.) And I have yet to tire of the Bernie memes.

It’s not all great and good, however, at the dawn of the Biden presidency. Though I’ve seen celebration at the return of the important of science to the White House, we can’t overlook that the science advisor nominee is… problematic.

There’s been a lot of focus on the coronavirus vaccine slowly making its way around the country and around the world. I’ve been following the updates of one “Your Local Epidemiologist,” and I’d recommend you take a look at why the vaccine development timeline was so speedy.

Of course, vaccine hesitancy is one of the next big factors to be dealt with. Here is one story of a mom who went from pro-vax to anti-vax and back. She’s not alone. Ben Franklin also went from anti-vaxxer to vaccine proponent over the course of his life. What’s not surprising is that slavery and racism were involved.

Returning slowly to our “cute animal Friday” tradition, I’d like to share this Twitter thread submitted by catherwood on the Skepchick Discord featuring wildlife photographers and the curious wildlife that insist on interrupting them.
