Spring dreams of blue boxes…

Russell T Davies has officially redeemed himself. I’ve just finished watching the first episode of the fourth series of Doctor Who, and it was completely fantastic. Last year’s over-hyped finale and christmas special left me wishing for the low budget, quirky brilliance of series one. He must have heard me, because the show seems to have rediscovered its soul.

Catherine Tate is great (wow, that rhymes), and she and David Tennant (who btw looks as lean and sexilicious as ever…mmm…) have this wonderful comic chemistry that has completely rejuvenated the series for me. They did spend some money on production, but the special effects were not the focus of the show, and the little c.g. monsters are completely adorable (and totally cheesy).

I can only hope that this isn’t a fluke, and can continue throughout the fourth series (my fingers are crossed–in a skepchickal way).

I now return you to your regularly scheduled skepchick programming.

  1. Last year was my least favorite finale, but you have to admit the reveal of The Face of Bo’s identity was pretty awesome.

  2. And the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica is finally on! This is going to be a sweet summer…

  3. No spoilers, everyone! I’ve yet to see further than season 2. The trouble with Catherine Tate is that she was already famous in the UK for a very annoying sketch show, and that biases me a little towards her and her mockney accent.

Oh, and we get the new season of BSG way later than everyone else, so no spoilers there either! I hope they don’t screw up, that ending was potentially a bad sign.

  4. donna, i didn’t want to have to tell you this way, but i am in fact your evil twin.
(or are you the evil one? i can never keep that straight.)

chris, my husband has been bugging me to watch battlestar for a couple of years now…i know i’ll like it once i do…i’ll have to do that soon.

  5. well, considering that i generally eschew dualistic distinctions and false dichotomies, yes, both twins can be evil.

  6. evil twins?

i’ve watched enough tv to know that a goatee is the one distinguishing feature of the true “evil twin.”
so whoever shaved off her beard must be the real evil twin. (?)

    hope this helps…

  7. yes, alan, but with today’s hair removal technologies, you will never be able to tell if one or both of us is indeed evil.
    mwahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…

  8. I just finished watching it as well. The Doctor and Donna do have what appears to be a great chemistry between them. Add a bit of sexual tension, a heaping portion of sarcasm, and the Doctor’s unbridled zest for life, and it looks like this is going to be a FANTASTIC season (it just sucks that we will have to wait a WHOLE YEAR for season 5).

    Russel T. is BRILLIANT!

  9. sorry…that last one was supposed to be @ rick.

you guys are all commenting at the same time and i can’t keep you straight!

alan, i guess i have higher levels of geekitude to aspire to.

  10. tk: You’ll be happy to know, then, that they’ve really toned down the more annoying elements of the Donna character this time around. I think they knew that the whole “Look, kids! It’s Catherine Tate!” thing wasn’t going to be sustainable across a whole season, so they’d have to write her as an actual character now. And I think they pulled it off.

  11. Speaking of Dr. Who, I just read this:

The evolutionary biologist and best-selling author of The God Delusion will appear as a guest star in the new series of Doctor Who, which began last night. “People were falling at his feet,” says Davies, creator of the BBC’s flagship show. “We’ve had Kylie Minogue on that set, but it was Dawkins people were worshipping.”

As writer and executive producer of Doctor Who, Davies often plays with religious imagery (from a cross-shaped space station to robot angels with halos), but he’s a fervent believer in Dawkins. “He has brought atheism proudly out of the closet!”

  12. Wow, I must be the last nerd on Earth who doesn’t watch Dr. Who.

Oh well, I just watched all 5 seasons of Futurama on DVD, guess it’s time to start with Dr. Who.

  13. yes you should.
there is much debate over where one should begin their doctor who journey. i picked up series one of the new incarnation, remembering vaguely being involved in contests as a child to see who could watch the longest without getting scared, but not really knowing anything at all about the premise.

personally, i think that’s the best place to start. chris eccleston is just all-around fantastic, and they hadn’t made any money yet, so it has this wonderfully kitschy feel to it a lot of the time.

in two short years it has become my favorite show.

  14. Romana is married to Richard Dawkins.

Romana is married to Richard Dawkins.

Romana is married to Richard Dawkins.

HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS?! That raises both of their cool factors by a factor of ten in my opinion, if such a thing is possible. (I am convinced that part of why my husband proposed to me is that I reminded him of Romana.) (Not a good enough reason to get married, if you were wondering, but still cool.)

They’re married! To each other! That just makes me HAPPY.

(And I can’t WAIT to see Season 3, which is where I’m at in the DVDs because I don’t have television and I have to wait for my friend Mark to finish watching his DVDs before I get them.)
