- Democratic AGs Sue to Force US to Ratify Equal Rights Amendment, AP via VOA: “In the lawsuit, the attorneys general argue that the deadline passed by Congress is not binding. The time limitation was not included in the text of the article that was sent to the states for consideration, they argue. Additionally, the attorneys general say, the U.S. Constitution doesn’t explicitly give Congress the power to set a timeline for states to ratify an amendment. They note that the last amendment to be added in 1992 – the 27th Amendment limiting the ability of members of Congress to raise their own pay – took more than 200 years to be ratified by 38 states. They’re asking a court to direct the archivist to certify that the amendment has passed and is now the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.”
- Donald Trump Wants To Bring Back Landmines, Make Not-America Maimed Again, Wonkette: “Donald Trump’s goal of reversing everything Barack Obama ever did is set to take a bold new step soon, with the reversal of Obama’s 2014 directive mostly getting the US military out of the business of using or stockpiling landmines. The order was a step toward bringing the US a little closer to compliance with a 1997 international treaty banning the devices, which kill or maim between 15,000 to 20,000 civilians annually, according to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. . . . None of the reporting we’ve looked at mentions it, but we can’t help but speculate Trump may also have a stiffy for mining the US-Mexico border.”
