Quickies: All Good News Distraction Edition

As the dumpster fire all around us expands to reveal it was actually a tire fire all along–much bigger, difficult to put out, with toxic effects we’ll be dealing with for years–I’ve decided to link to only good news today. This was more difficult to do than expected.

  • Girl Boss: On the International Day of the Girl, Meet the Incredible Girls on Kidbox’s Kids Board of Directors, the Root: “For Kidbox’s Kids board of directors, the socially-minded kids’ style service chose 10 kids between the ages of 6 to 15—six of whom are girls (with two alums included above, each child serving a one-year term)—’who have demonstrated leadership and a passion for social good,’ according to a statement. As compensation for their service, each has received $10,000 in clothing value ‘to help execute a meaningful project to drive kindness and give back in their community.'” I liked this article primarily to read about the incredible ideas and actions of these inspiring kids that led them to being chosen for this board.
  • Simone Biles Is Now the Most-Decorated Gymnast in World Championships History, Teen Vogue: I love this particular passage and quotation from Simone: “And FYI — Simone has some words for people who misread that confidence as cockiness. In conversation with USA Today, the gymnast explained: ‘I’ve won five world titles and if I say, “I’m the best gymnast there is” (the reaction is) “Oh, she’s cocky. Look at her now.” No, the facts are literally on the paper. I think it’s important to teach (young girls) that.”
  • An Old-Timey Super Mario Bros. Medley With a Twirling Tap Dancer Adding to the Song’s Percussion, Laughing Squid: Just a fun video with an astonishingly good tap dancer.
