Quickies: If catcalls were compliments, fake police, and power poses

- If catcalls were really just compliments – “If catcalls were compliments, the intent would be to uplift the other person and not uplift your own sense of power and sexual desirability.”
- Fake police and other things men don’t realize women fear – “…no matter how random or “unique” it sounds, the idea of being hit by another car so a man can rape you, or stopped by a fake police officer and attacked like Kim Kardashian just was, this is stuff women think about all the time. Because we have to.”
- “Power Poses” co-author: I do not believe the effects are real – “Perhaps, you’re among the more than 36 million people that have watched social psychologist and Harvard professor Amy Cuddy’s TED talk about “power poses” — poses she says would make people feel more powerful and more willing to take risks. For example, poses like leaning back in your chair or standing with your hands on your hips.” From Angela.
- Why GMOs might not be such a bad thing after all – A great interview with Kavin from Grounded Parents.
Catcalls might not be complimentary but they are complementary, in that they immediately add up to a 90 degree turn to get out of there.
Amanda,
If Amy Cuddy doesn’t believe that the effects of the “power poses” are real, why is she promoting it?
wrt: GMOs, one example I can think of would be if we got microbes in rice paddies to produce less methane. (When it comes to methane emissions, people never think about rice, but there you go.)
