Quickies: Sexual harassment in science, slut shaming, and the era of the bitch
- Are you a sexual harasser and a scientist? We have some questions… – ” Over the last several years, a rising tide of science journalists, many (though not all) of them women, have trained their lenses not just on the practice of science and its myriad successes and failures, but on scientists themselves — particularly those who continue to flourish in male-dominated departments and institutions at the expense of female colleagues. It may be overstating things to call “sexual harassment in science” a full-fledged beat — and to be sure, the problem has a long pedigree.”
- Three things that need to happen before I defend men from Olympic sexism – “Internet stragglers complain about ‘horny PC feminazis’ complaining about sexist TV coverage while ogling male Olympians. Here’s the difference.”
- This woman in tech was slut-shamed – and clapped back with the most devastating response – “A cybersecurity expert at an IT security firm posted a photo on her company’s LinkedIn, asking followers to guess how many USB sticks she was holding to win a bottle of champagne. The responses were horrifying. LinkedIn deleted the post altogether.” From Mrmisconception.
- Marvel artists turn Black influencers and athletes into super versions of themselves – These are amazing works of art. From Ray.
- The era of “the bitch” is coming – “A Hillary Clinton presidential victory promises to usher in a new age of public misogyny.” From Mrmisconception.
What’s going to be particularly noxious about the “era of the bitch” thing is the way Hillary’s presidency will simultaneously be used to justify extreme sexism towards her and evidence that sexism is “over”.
