Quickies: Kids on gender in gaming, the Korean language divide, and faked study results

- Inside the research that could change the perception of kids, gaming, and gender – “Among other things, the survey seemed to show that girls were much more invested in the gender of their character than boys were, and that while girls and boys seemed to play similar games at similar rates the term “gamer” didn’t seem to resonate with young women as much as it did with young men.”
- “Congrats, you have an all male panel!” goes viral with help from David Hasselhoff – “You don’t have to ask a panel made up only of men to figure out that if your panel is made up only of men, you’ve got a gender imbalance.” From Arturo.
- Korean is virtually two languages and that’s a big problem for North Korean defectors – “But accent differences are just the start of the linguistic frustration and confusion that many North Koreans feel when they first arrive in the South. An even bigger challenge is learning all the new words South Koreans have acquired in the seven decades since partition, many of them borrowed directly from English.” From Mary.
- Data faked in study about gay people changing voters’ minds – “A researcher apparently made up the results of the much-publicized study, as revealed Tuesday by scientists trying to replicate it. The researcher also credited funding organizations that deny having any involvement in the work.” From Jamie.
That’s interesting about the faked gay study, Mary. I was looking for the study to possibly mine it for details in a essay I’m writing for the humanist market. I’m two for two on my submissions to the skeptical and humanist market (Skeptical Inquirer and Free Inquiry), so it’s obvious where I need to focus my new non-fiction career. (I was a fiction writer before my six-week coma, which was kind of blessing, despite the fact that I’m still in rehab.) Both works stem from my coma experience, as does the new one.
Anyway, I couldn’t remember the details about the study well enough to find it via Google, so I decided to quote a Pew survey instead. I guess it wouldn’t have mattered, since I haven’t finished the editing of the new essay yet, but still…whew!
Thanks so much for sharing this!
Wow, the information on the faked study has advanced a lot since yesterday. I was about to say the headline was wrong because it was retracted because the data could not be verified. Turns out it is looking like a whole cloth fabrication.
