My favorite events are events that include art in the mix. And SkeptiCon in Missouri is doing just that! The planners found an extra room at the hotel where they are having their annual FREE conference that focuses on skepticism, atheism and science and they are letting us put art in it! WOOT!
This year’s event has a planetary science theme and so will the art show!
I am working on a few projects for this event. I will be displaying some astrology/astronomy bait and switch paintings, with some cool science facts provided by astronomer and podcaster Pamela Gay. I’ll show some images familiar to astrology and Pamela will help me teach some of the science hidden behind the symbols.
I will be displaying a painting based on comets to go along with really cool (literally dry ice) demo from another bad-ass astronomer, Skepchick and science communicator, Nicole Gugliucci!
That’s not enough science themed art?
I also created a book and photography project based on magnetic fields using metal and strong magnets! I will have a few copies of the book, some photos and three 16″ x 20″ photo prints on canvas on display.
That is still not enough art for ya?
Ok, fine then.
On Sunday I will give a short talk with lots of cool photos showing and explaining the art project I did called, A Women’s Room Online. The installation focused on the internet harassment women are facing online and I will share the process behind building the art and talk a little bit about what we can do as a community to help fight back against the violence and negativity.
So what are you waiting for? Go sign up for this FREE event. If you can, please consider donating to help them keep this amazing event free for everyone! If you are attending and you want to put art in the planetary science art show, there is still time. Info on participating in the art show can be found by clicking here.
See you soon!
