Quickies: A forensic pathologist’s day, feminism doesn’t make women “victims,” and the diversity gap in sci-fi/fantasy films

  • A day in the life of a forensic pathologist – “At this point a television pathologist would change into designer shoes and jet off to the park, where she would interview bystanders, collect their DNA, and process it in her mobile DNA lab to find the assailant in just under 20 minutes. I, on the other hand, pull the shoe covers off my sensible clogs and clomp across the building to track down an investigator and ask him to call law enforcement.”
  • Feminism makes women “victims”? I think you’ve mistaken us for sexists – “An old canard about feminists is that, in addition to being hirsute bra-burners, we want to turn all women into “victims” – and thanks to “Women Against Feminism”, this particular accusation has gained some moderately mainstream traction in recent weeks.”
  • Cause of mysterious Siberian holes possibly found – Hint: It’s not aliens! From Criticaldragon1177.
  • The diversity gap in sci-fi and fantasy films – Those are some depressingly low numbers.
  • My latest Read it and Weep episode! – On the truly awful zombie apocalypse book “The Rising” by Brian Keene. Warning, the book is very violent, gross, sexist, and racist so all of those themes are discussed in the episode. I have to say, it’s a very cathartic experience to get to tear down such a horrible book with humor.
  • Cute Animal Friday! A herd of baby capybaras that actually made me “Awwww!” out loud. You’ve heard of the new movie, Boyhood? Well, try the cuter version, Cathood.

  1. From the Guardian article, ‘The expected conservative hacks have come out, with the National Review Online bashing the “hostile” feminist responses and Rush Limbaugh saying “pictures of these babes” are “really, really great to see”.’

Earning the approval of Rush Limbaugh should cause you to question your life choices.

    1. Jambonpomplemouse,

What should really make them question there life choices should be the fact those people are completely wrong about this. Ideally they should actually do their research and see what feminism is, what it has done for women ( and men to some degree ) and what things were like prior to feminism. If not for feminism women still wouldn’t be able to vote in this country, or practically anywhere else.

  2. I’ve always been puzzled by the anti-feminists’ implication that complaining about being treated poorly and demanding better is being a “victim”, while just accepting whatever shit people toss at you is not. Seems backwards to me.

    1. To conservatives, “victim” is a word reserved for those in the catbird seat (white, rich, Christian, American, etc.) who are having their privileges diminished for the benefit of others. True victims are a threat to that delusion, why would they recognize that? I would suspect that a very large part of the anti-feminist woman are conservative and truly do not see themselves as victims because they are using an wholly inappropriate definition.

    2. “Victim” is a standard right-wing canard. To them, victimhood is a state of mind. As such, if a mugger were to stab me tonight, it wouldn’t be the stab wound in my gut that made me the victim, but the fact that I perceive the knife in my gut as the mugger’s fault. What? You didn’t know that?

(And yet many would still say ‘create your own reality’ woo is the exclusive province of the left.)

Of course, none of this applies to them. In fact, by simply trying to find someone who can get me to the hospital, I’m threatening the mugger’s rights. Funny how that works.

  3. The irony of feminism allowing them to define who and what they want to be and a platform with which to declare it, wholly escapes these women..
I guess if your life is comfortable enough, you wouldn’t need feminism. It’s then perfectly okay to throw every other woman on Earth under the bus, bc hey! you got yours.

  4. If those damned abolitionists hadn’t made all our slaves into ‘victims’….
