Quickies: Tropes vs. Women, predicting the next Game of Thrones book, and antivaxxers misusing Ursula K. LeGuin

- New Tropes vs. Women video – Women as background decoration, part one.
- Predicting when George RR Martin will come out with his next book – ““Martinology” — the pseudoscientific process by which fans attempt to predict the release date for the forthcoming “The Winds of Winter” (“TWOW”), the sixth book in the series – has never been a more popular avenue of amateur study.” From Sarah.
- Man who idolizes Elliot Rodger threatens to kill women at UW – From Courtney.
- Ursula K. LeGuin is not an antivaxxer or why the omela argument fails – Because vaccination is not like sacrificing children…
I heard about the appropriation of Ursula K LeGuin’s work by the anti-vaxxers. But they don’t even care that their choice not to immunize their children could result in other children dying. That…takes a certain lack of self-awareness I’ve only seen in a few places.
Regarding the anti-vax story, it seems to me that they have it exactly backwards. If, as they assert, vaccination causes harm then they and their unvaccinated children are benefiting from the (asserted) harm done to other children. They are leeching off of the herd resistance as the citizens of Omelas leech off of the misery of the chosen child.
I highly recommend the new Women vs. Tropes in Video Games video. But be warned, she says it’s not for children, as it does have graphic violence against women. In fact, such shocking, horrific violence, I, as a gamer, was floored at how bad it has gotten in games. I had no idea it was this bad.
