Skepchick Quickies 4.3
- Maine state legislator pushing for dietary supplement coverage – State Rep. Andrea Boland “… makes from $500 to $1,000 per month from her work selling nutritional supplements.” Way to be ethical. I’m glad my rep does useful things like supporting gay marriage. (From the Consumer Health Digest.)
- The museum of hoaxes – Sad that April Fool’s Day comes but once a year? Hopefully this will cheer you up. From Infinite Monkey.
- Sisters make people happy, brothers breed distress – I can hear my brother bursting out laughing at this article from hundreds of miles away. From Marshall.
- iPhoto suffers from pareidolia – Teddy Ruxpin? Is that you? From Misha.
- It’s Cute Animal Friday once again! Here’s a video of the Columbus zoo’s brand new baby elephant from Jen. Jasmine the greyhound caregiver should melt the iciest of skeptical hearts (from Infinite Monkey). And I can’t get over how adorable this baby lemur hiding in its mother fur is.
Here’s a cute animal for you! It’s Barry the Giant Sea Worm!

*blinks* Sisters breed content? Brothers breed distress?
*rifles through a million memories old and new* Never met my siblings, obviously.
@arthwollipot: You know, I have a pretty broad personal definition of “cute” but that thing just looks like a long poo with legs.
That baby elephant looks like I did the other day when I drank way too much whiskey:
Unable to stand, difficulty walking, covered in slime, and sporting a 7-inch trunk.
Ba-Zing!
@Amanda: You must have some seriously interesting poo.
You forgot the disclaimer for Cute Animal Friday-Brush After Reading
@arthwollipot: Yes, because I’m full of toxins and never drink any colon-cleansing teas or get coffee enemas.
Can you imagine, mandate the use of colon cleansing crap by insurance companies. They call it preventive– we call it junk.
In Arizona they mandate chiropractic coverage, which has led to “emergency chiropractic” making money off auto accidents.
Pseudoscience and politics- what a dangerous combination, one can kill you and the other can make sure they have license to do so
I giggled throughout that entire elephant video. The zoo is only like twenty minutes from my house; I’ll have to head out there this summer and see that little guy.
More fun elephant (and dog) stuff.

Was the sister story an april fools day prank?
Allow me to brag:
IOWA SUPREME COURT OVERTURNS BAN ON GAY MARRIAGE!!!
I love my State today.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/04/us/04iowa.html?_r=1&hp
Normally my state does so well but we do have our share of unethical people. Thankfully the bill failed and now she’s being called on it.
On the plus side the gay marriage bill here in Maine has 60 co-sponsors, that’s 1/3 of the entire legislature that don’t just approve of gay marriage but actually want their name on the bill before it even goes up for a vote. It’s a promising sign.
A friend e-mailed the Jasmine story to my the other day. I love it! But, the elephant video was even better. It made me squeal, and I’m not prone to squealing. Baby elephants gots nothin on kittens, I tells ya.
And the BBC sibling article does not surprise me. No wonder I needed years of therapy! Thanks, older brother!
But I’m feeling MUCH better now. Really.
@TerrySimpson:
And people wonder why health insurance is so expensive in your country.
