Skepchick Holiday Gift Guide
The second Skepchick podcast is now online! Listen on iTunes or on our Libsyn page.
This episode, we take a look at our favorite gifts to give and get this holiday season. This show includes Rebecca, A, Bug_Girl, Maria, Stacey, Jill, Elyse, and Carrie. Editing and post-production was done by A. Thanks, A!
Here are photos of and links to everything we chatted about. Happy shopping!

PS: Don’t forget to check out last year’s Skepchick Gift Guide for even more!
Remember, you can subscribe to the Skepchick podcast using any of your favorite tools like iTunes or Zune. For our next episode, we plan to introduce music and possibly more dirty talk, so you won’t want to miss it!
the discount code for the Heron Adornments is Skepchick5 not Skepchick15.
@Elyse: You must be mistaken. It has always said Skepchick5. Ahem. ALWAYS!
(thank you)
From one podcaster to another, you should run your podcast through the Levelator before posting it. It brings up the tiny little voices and brings down the loud gun blasts and cat attacks.
It doesn’t accept lossy files like mp3, so you should save it first in WAV of AIFF, run it through the Levelator, then convert it MP3 before posting it. Al of the conversion is really easy in Audacity.
Love the list!
Also, speaking of pi-related products on Etsy, there’s a store on Etsy called nephilimdesigns that has a cute little sterling silver band
with π etched on the outside and pi to ten decimal places on the inside. I thought it was the cutest thing ever, but got him to etch a quote
from Romeo & Juliet on the inside (Act.Scene.Line on the outside) instead, since it’s my favorite play. I’ve worn the ring every day since I got it. :)
Not sure if he does little custom things at the moment, but there’s still that cute little pi ring! <3
@Rebecca:
Of course I know that’s what it ALWAYS said. I was just reinforcing it for the readers… they get paredolia of the ones.
(you’re welcome. your secret is safe with me.)
Hmmm. No books? :-)
The caffeine necklace is gorgeous! LOLkate may have to do some shopping for numero uno.
Ooo! Check out my platypus ornament among all this other cool stuff. I’m so flattered to be included.
This will also teach me to check my feeds more often so I don’t almost miss stuff like this.
@ The Bad Astronomer
They were probably just recommending things that weren’t already on holiday wish lists. :)
@The Bad Astronomer: We figured everyone already has the only book to bother with this holiday season, no?
I actually had a conversation with a Tillers International team yesterday on their way back from Uganda–they couldn’t say enough good stuff about Heifer International. (They aren’t related.)
That made me feel even better about the plug :)
I’m only on the meteorite chapter, but good stuff!
I probably should’ve finished the chapter before going to sleep though…
@reedbraden:
Thanks so much for the suggestion. You’re absolutely right. I am learning, and missed that all important part.
Also, I think we’ll likely add some layers: we’ve talked structure, segments, adding music… that kind of thing.
All of these things will help make us shiny, I’m sure, but I won’t forget to levelate (is that the right word?) in the future!
You know, my Xmas list was very very small before I read this. Now I want all the shiny pretty.
Excellent charity giving ideas, too. I’ve donated to Heifer International in the past and I’ll be checking out the others as well.
@reedbraden: Yeah, I did the first podcast’s levels by hand, as I don’t have any programs to do it automagically. On SGU we had some trouble with Levelator not working very well on my girlier, higher register voice, but hopefully that was just because of the difference between my voice and the guys’. On a show of all girls, maybe it won’t present that much of a problem.
That necklace made me chuckle as I thought of the guy in the film “Pi”.
Sexy, sexy Sextants! :D
@kookbreaker2: I touched that sextant.
@Rebecca: I use the Levelator on my podcast with one guy and one girl and it seems to work just fine, even when we sing songs and I blast out my vocal chords in painful falsetto. The only issue I’ve had is that there’s a minuscule amount of static when things get loud, but it’s well worth it to not have to constantly adjust the volume to keep it at a pleasant listening volume.
I’m giving out a lot of the Jerry Andrus documentary video. It’s really nice, the people that made are very nice, and it’s really cheap to mail.
I’ve seen the greatest double-takes when I tell people that my umbrella needs fresh batteries.
Sigh. It hasn’t been easy living here in Richmond VA during the holidays, so I am relying on NPR and skeptical podcasts to keep me sane. I am listening to the Skepchick holiday podcast as I type this and I have to say a huge thank you to all the ladies of Skepchick for two amazing podcasts and I am so excited for more!
It took me a while to get a chance to listen to this episode of the podcast but I just did and it was fantastic. Thank you so very much for mentioning Surly-Ramics and for posting the “easy as pi” pendant. I so love all of the skepchicks cant wait to give you all big hugs at TAM 7! Thanks again!
Why not try some lovely Bismuth crystals? Smaller ones can be mounted as pendants, brooches or earrings. Reasonably priced too! (I have no connection with this site)
