Memetic Imperative
Mr. Laden has tagged us with a meme! We’ve been tagged before (um, even Bug_Girl tagged Skepchick with this one in November) but I usually forget about them because I’m a jerk, so this time I was determined to make it happen. Here are the rules as written:
One: Link to the person who tagged you.
Two: Post the rules.
Three: Write six random things about yourself.
Four. Tag six people.
Five. Inform the tagees and the person who tagged you.
Because this is Skepchick and we are super special, here are random things from random Skepchicks. I’m withholding names so that you, the commenter, can guess at whose is whose. Maybe tonight or tomorrow I’ll post the answers. Here are our factoids:
1. I was a model in a fetish fashion show last Halloween.
2. I once shot my best friend in the mouth.
3. I once traded books with Gregory Hines at his request. We were at a Washington, D.C. radio station. I gave him “A Winter’s Tale,” by Mark Helprin. He gave me “East of Eden,” by John Steinbeck. We were both sitting in the greenroom. (I was waiting for the journalist I was “shadowing” for the day.) He was waiting to go on All Things Considered. I had my face buried in the book so intently, he interrupted to see what was so compelling, and suggested we trade. I was 16 years old.
4. I once picked up Steven J. Gould from the airport and had him tell me all about cupolas, and what a tragedy it was they were removed from older homes, on the way back to the university where we were hosting him. Very nice man, and he is missed. I love that he had so many different interests beyond just evolutionary biology.
5. When I was 16, I happened to spot two kids drowning in a creek, so I jumped in a canoe and paddled a few hundred meters to save them. They never really thanked me, the little bastards.
6. I can’t swim but I can float like a cork.
I’ll tag some people who, like me, I don’t expect to actually follow through: Ben at Bad Science, Steve at Neurologica, Rodney Anonymous, commenter Oskar at Suburban Panic, Blake at Science After Sunclipse, and newbie blogger Richard Wiseman.
This rather blurs the line between, meme, chain-letter, and spam. The answers were interesting although I truly hope that “shot my best friend in the mouth” was a reference to Novocaine.
Novocaine is Rebecca’s best friend?
Steve’s link is broken, I can hit him here Neurologica
@Protesilaus: Whoops, thanks, I’ve fixed it now!
I never participate in these, but for you, I’ll make an exception. Imagine that I said that in an outlandish, movie-mafia accent.
Also, I added a seventh, completely made up “fact,” so if you’d like to come check out my answers, you can try to guess which one is the fake, feel free. it’s like “Science or Fiction,” except far less interesting.
I’m gonna guess #5 is Teek because of the reference to meters.
I’ll say #2 is Sam because someone has to.
And I’ll say #1 is Elyse because I like the mental image that brings.
I’m out on the rest.
i’m gonna guess:
#1 ARelGirl.
#5 tkingdoll
#6 i wanna say Elyse, but have a sinking feeling that i’m wrong.
as far as the others go…i have no idea and would be guessing more than i did for the ones i provided answers.
um, that’s supposed to be:
#1 ARealGirl
doh!
@Frankiemouse: “a sinking feeling” is the kind of pun I ban people for…
Well, I did my best, but I don’t know if I’ll hear back from the Dalai Lama.

@RodneyAnon: I enjoyed your answers, and your choices to tag are great. Here’s hoping at least one of them take up your challenge.
I don’t even know who I’m correcting, but “Stephen” Jay Gould, not “Steven”. And spell out his middle name! He always did.
