Back to Your [Grass] Roots
In Friday’s Quickies, a link was included to a brand new site. A site debuting in time with SkepTrack at Dragon*Con. A site which promises to expand our horizons, even if just a little, by way of finding more groups and more individuals who associate themselves with rational thinking and a skeptical world view. I’m talking, of course, about Grassroots Skeptics.
You all know K.O. Myers, a.k.a. Oskar Kennedy, of Skepchick commenter and Suburban Panic! fame. Grassroots Skeptics is his baby. His Internet baby. Because he has a real-life baby outside of the Internet (and she’s adorable, if I may say so). He cares deeply about the skeptical movement and hopes for more and better things to come of it. Grassroots Skeptics’ aim is to become a centralized location for advertising your skeptical group’s activities, a tool that can be used to create new groups where there are none and a sounding board for new ideas. There are a lot of people out there who need reaching, whether they’re floundering on the edge of skepticism or just don’t know who else thinks the way they do, and Grassroots Skeptics is a conscious effort to reach out and pull in the stragglers, as well as get already-existing groups motivated to do more.
A couple of us here at Skepchick have been in on getting the site started (Jen on web design, Maria on calendar entries, myself on data entry), and I know I, personally, am really looking forward to seeing what improvements are made thanks to the introduction of Grassroots Skeptics.
Go check out the site. Sign up for the forum, send in your group’s information, plug your blog/site/podcast and get the word out! Grassroots Skeptics can be reached on Twitter (@GRSkeptics), on Facebook and by e-mail at [email protected].
Thanks for the link and the kind words, and also for all of your help with the project so far!
whoo hoo, I know Granite State Skeptics will be right on this (and has already had a lot of help)
