EventsSkepticism
Do you run a local skeptics group?
If you manage a local skeptical group, I am doing some research and would like your help. Can you please fill out this short survey (only 10 questions) telling me some basic information about the group you manage? Some of you may have already heard from me about this.
Also, did you know that we maintain an events calendar of skeptical events around the world at Skepchick? If you’d like to get an item added to the calendar, just send an email to [email protected].
This is a truly great idea Maria thanks for sending it to me.
@Masala Skeptic: I am sorry I have no good answers to your poll. I would very much like to start a skeptics group here.
Can anyone provide links, suggestions, or materials on how best to do this?
Regards, The Skepdick
@The Skepdick: I had started a wiki a long time ago to help people with ideas for starting a group. It’s not got a lot of traction but it does have some ideas and general thoughts: http://meetskeptics.wikidot.com/getting-started
The plan is to move a lot of this material onto the Events area on Skepchick over the next few months.
Good luck!
@The Skepdick: you could also try creating a group on Meetup.com when our group got started there were a number of people who had meetup set to alert them if such group formed.
Exactly what @Northernskeptic: said.
Hope that helps!
And I’ll mirror @Northernskeptic: and @Kaylia_Marie. I created both a Meetup and Facebook group, and cross-post events on both. The Meetup group filled up fast, and now each group has about 100 members, mostly non-overlapping… Only a tiny fraction of those people show up at meetings (except for our Darwin Day event, which had over 60 people, when I was expecting maybe 20. Yikes!), but it’s good to know that there are that many people interested.
Sad to say, I don’t know of any physically-present skeptics in my area. I may be the only one in Eastern West Virginia. The nearest ones I know of are down in DC, an 90-minute drive away. I think I would go mad without the Innertoobz to connect with rational people like the Skepchicks.
I also would most likely be lynched or burned at the stake here if it were commonly known around here that I’m a skeptic and an atheist (“a goddamn librul heathen communistic socialistic pinko commie fag scum!* He’s even a DemocRAT!”)
There are already many blogs for skepticism and my two cents worth fit here just fine.
* Shades of George Carlin!
Gee…A filter. I never would have known without that post. That’s what I get for channeling George Carlin. :-D
