Rockin’ Chicago

The results are in and the meet-up is planned!

Thanks to everyone who took 7 seconds out of their lives to fill out the survey.  Hopefully your feedback will help me put together some rockin’ meet-ups in the next few months.

In an effort to please the raukus and the chill, I found a place where we should have plenty of talk-time, but we also will have access to Rock Band* on XBox360 and a Wii and shots of whiskey!  Survey results and meet-up info after the jump.

1. What kind of meet up do you want this month?

  • Loud, drunk, raucous
26.5% 9
  • quiet, chill, and lots of hilarious conversation
47.1% 16
  • meet at a museum, then grab food and drinks

  • romance, candlelight, staring skeptically into each others’ eyes

  • Skepchickal Trivia
11.8% 4
  • Black-tie required dinner cruise
5.9% 2

Some of the write-ins included:

  • road trip to Canada
  • an orgy
  • combinations of the above options

Since there were 2 people wanting romance and candlelight and 2 people wanting an all-out black-tie ball, I figured you 4 could find each other and work out some kind of double date deal then find a hotel room and join up with the orgy guy.  The rest of us are going to talk, joke, drink, play Wii and be Rock Stars!

Where: Mahoney’s Pub & Grille

551 N. Ogden Ave.

When: Saturday, August 16 at 8pm

See you there!

*The first Chicago meet-up, thrown by me and Hemant at FriendlyAtheist.com, offered free Guitar Hero.  That meet-up was in March at Whiskey Road which no longer exists.  Hemant and I take complete responsiblity for the demise of Whiskey Road since it was unquestionably caused by our party’s embarrassing lack of mad Guitar Hero skillz

  1. I am up here in Milwaukee, and a former resident of Chicago – Lincoln Square neighborhood. If my wife and I were not camping this weekend I’d come down and hang out with you lovely people.

    Next time!

  2. So Chicago wants to be as skeptically hip and happening as Atlanta? That’s so CUTE!

    Dreamer.

    :)

  3. Next TAM the Teen Skepchicks should have a Wii (heh) party. Video games, nerdom, and rock music are really good ways to a teen-skeptic’s heart.

(I want an excuse/way to play Rockband with a bunch of skeptics.)

  4. Okay, I’m totally not in the Chicago crowd, but I just thought I would do my skeptical duty of pointing out just how flawed a one-person-one-vote system is. Majority-rule makes it much more likely that an “decision” will be made that dissatisfies a significant majority more than it satisfies the ostensible majority.

Better to use ranking systems or instant runoffs or other, more clever means of approaching consensus.

Here’s a page that talks about a few of those.

  5. I wish I wasn’t so beat–I totally want to play with a Wii.

And I promise to wear pants!!!

I suspect there aren’t enough Michigan Skeptics to do anything in Lansing. :(

  6. Ooops! Thanks, mollishka! I fixed that.

    Yes, Saturday.

Bug Girl: No need for pants. Just wear your shoes. If you wear pants, we’ll be flooded with emails wanting to know why Milwaukee gets X-rated meet ups but the other cities only get PG-13.

    JRice:

I’ll take that into consideration for future meet-ups. I’m hoping I did a nice job of compromising between the loud drunks and the conversationalists. Anyone who wants to come in full black-tie attire is certainly welcome to (but I’d discourage it), and romance is always an option.

  7. I finally consulted a map. That’s only about a mile and a half from where I’m staying!! So count me in, though maybe not until 9 or later. We Ohioans have too much other stuff going on to be “on time.” :)

  8. man how bout a “virtual meetup” on xbox live? haha i play halo 3 and my gamertag is “t1est0” [that’s spelled with a number one and a zero].

  9. Funny, Improbable Bee, I’m so far west of the city I often tell people I live 2 blocks from Oregon.

10 years ago no one would have considered my town to be a suburb. Thanks urban sprawl!

  10. Elyse: Sorry to disappoint. No legal marriage yet. It’s just sometimes easier to say “wife” or “Missus” or whatever. Anyone know the “common law” marriage laws her in Illinois?

  11. Illinois does not recognize common law marriages. You might as well be gay married.

The good news is that I feel less out of the “loop” with the Chicago group. (see what I did there? I’m so clever.)

  12. and now I’m wondering: do you think freshly immigrated Hispanics in Chicago get confused between el tren in Spanish and L train? Do they end up taking the Metra to the Brookfield Zoo instead of taking the L to the Lincoln Park Zoo?
