Divining for a Date 2008, May Challenge

This month’s challenge is going to require you to use your divining rods!

I have posted a Google map of Homewood, IL. On this map is the home I lived in while I was in elementary school. I want you to find it.

Some tips:

  • My former home is on the map exactly as it is posted here. You do not have to scroll around all of Homewood to find it.
  • This is no longer my home nor is it the home of any family members. My family moved from Homewood when I was 10 years old. You won’t be able to find it by looking in the phone book.
  • You’ll probably want to click on View Larger Map and scroll around. Use whatever view works best for your rod (i.e., street view, terrain, etc.)

You can post your submission any way you would like. You can give me the address of the house. You can post an image of the map with your answer clearly marked. You could go to the house and take a picture of yourself in front of it and post it. However you want to do it is fine with me! Just make sure your answer is not ambiguous… divining rods are very accurate, you know.

Good Luck!

  1. I see a small, brick house… yes.. yess…. something to do with golfing… My divining rods are crossing now… yes! There it is:

    18634 Golfview Ave, Homewood, IL

I see strange tublar forms on your front lawn… ominous shapes, foreboding. They are threatening to destroy your former home, or something very near to it. You must immediately purchase a lucky charm to avoid this disaster, and I happen to have such a charm for sale… I’ll let it go for only $3000, since I sense your need is so dire. …Though my selling it to you could mean disaster for me, I will make this sacrifice for you!

  2. Well, you could use a 10 (15? 20?) year old phone book and look in that. Now, to find an old Homewood phonebook and claim psychic powers.
My non-existant powers say 52 alexander street.

  3. Using my magical mouse cursor and the silent whispers of the spirits around me, I have been informed that you lived at “912 Verne Lane”. I’ve also been informed that I look good in a cowboy hat and chaps so the spirits may just be toying with me again.

  4. The spirits are telling me your house is in Nebraska. Or Alaska. Or some other state with the letter “A” (or some other vowel?) in its name.

I may have forgotten to pay the spirits bill.

  5. To appreciate this answer you need to know a little about my method. To prevent my subconscious bias to interfere with my link to the norse deities I divined the answer on a blank piece of paper, on the other side of which was the mere outline of the map placed semi-randomly off center.
I first tried my trusty pendulum, but I wasn’t happy with the result, which is surprising, cause I made out of sewing thread, and weird screw and a magnetic soccer ball.
I then went looking for paper clips to make tiny divining rods, and when I couldn’t find any of those, I chose a more direct and appropriate method: I cast a map pin.

It told me that you, while in elementary school, lived on Lexington avenue, on the west side of the street, somewhere between Heather road and Downey road. HOLY crap! I can “walk” up and down the road on this thing!

Okay, after looking at the houses I’m thinking 18636 Lexington avenue, but that’s with my conscious bias interfering, so it might be the house on either side.

I wonder if I can read the license plate on the car parked outside 18642…

Damn… This is just wrong… How can they afford building up a database like that?

  6. I feel that there is a letter A in the address.. or an M? Does that ring a bell with you? Possibly another pointy letter? I feel this very strongly.. Definitely A or M, or W. No? Perhaps I’m just picking up on a traumatic episode of Sesame Street you watched in that house.

  7. With that many houses on the map, I’m going to bet that nobody will have guessed it by the end of the month.

  8. My magic 8 ball has told me:
    2916 Chayes Park

As an added bonus, it included the following string of numbers:

  9. I’m sorry, but I have tried this 12 times now, and my divining rod always points to Dolphin lake. These older rods don’t have that new fangled re-calibrate button. But on the other hand, it has been 100% percent effective finding Dolphin lake. The new ones don’t even come close to that record!

  10. It’s… somewhere between 183rd street and Heather road… Hard to get accurate point from this far… West. Definitely west of Argyle avenue… It’s in Clyde road.
