Skepchick Just Got Better!

As I mentioned on here previously, part of my New Year’s resolution to rock harder includes beefing up the blog with some fresh new talent. One new face — er, name I guess — around here is A, aka commenter “a.real.girl.” I had the pleasure of meeting A last year at TAM5 (she won the chocolate challenge), and she also happens to be a model in the next Skepchick calendar. A offered to take over the monumental task of getting the Skepchick and Skepdude calendars produced. She now has blogging privileges here, and will be posting to update you all on the progress of the calendars and perhaps to run some fun surveys and get feedback.

I’m currently working on plans to incorporate three other writers in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that.

I’m also looking for other Skepchicks who might want to help out on the blog. I’m looking for more great writers, of course, but I also have positions for women who might not be writers but still want to help. I need a few skepchicks who are good at finding funny/interesting skeptic-related YouTube videos, photos, quotes, or links. Please e-mail me with some info about yourself if you’re interested in joining our growing Skepchick team!

On a side note, I see that Derren Brown’s newest book is out! I haven’t picked up my copy yet, but apparently the last chunk of it is a plea for rationality. I really enjoy Brown’s stuff, and I’m sure the book is great. Read a review over on BoingBoing.

  1. I can recommend Derren Brown's book, it's not the usual sort of thing I'd read, but it's worth going through some of the odder parts – the ideomotor effect and some of the memory stuff is great fun.

  2. Hiya! Thanks for the warm welcome (and way to set the bar Exarch!)

I'll be posting a few questions about what the Skepchick community would like to see for the calendars, including a potential 2008 calendar afterall. (Or at least a reasonably calendar-like something so no one has a gap in their collections.)

I'll do my best to contribute to the harder rocking.

  3. Is the Brown book even available in the US? I don't see it on the US version of Amazon.

  4. Brown's book isn't here in the US from all I can tell. Not listed on any major US bookstore site. It's already in paperback for a mere 2 pounds on the UK amazon site. But international shipping is around 6 to 7 pounds from most sellers.

I've paid $18 dollars for plenty of books, but it's a bit hefty for a paperback price. Not to mention the wait… But I really wanna read the book.
