Vegas, Baby!

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada

Like Rebecca I am heading out to TAM 5 in Las Vegas shortly. Although I didn’t think I’d like Las Vegas before I visited there, I have to admit the city has grown on me. I’ve been there for the past two TAMs and also a few other times for geology work. Red Rock Canyon is one of my favorite places to go when I’m visiting Las Vegas. The bright neon lights of the strip can be fun, for awhile, but going out to the clean, quiet, breathtaking desert landscape that envelopes the city is very refreshing after a couple of days of being blinded by gaudy casino carpets.

In any case, I’m looking forward to a fun mixture of casino and desert adventures as well as being able to see some of my favorite magicians, scientists, and skeptics from all over the world. And yes, a geology friend and I will be going to Red Rock Canyon on Sunday. If you really want to come along, we may be taking a mini, impromptu tour on Sunday afternoon. After Rebecca’s presentation, of course!

If you’re not going to TAM 5, you should be! Buy a plane ticket now or drive/run/walk/ride a camel to the Riviera Hotel by Thursday evening. You can still buy TAM tickets at the door, I believe. If nothing else, you can still meet Rebecca, myself, and other skepchicks who post on this forum.

Viva Las Vegas, Baby.

  1. Redrock rules, I'm out there like twice a week. Sometimes just driving to see the burros at night. Creepy little things that are also cute as hell.

    Like doggy horses.

Be sure to pack a bit warmer than you might think, its about 40 degrees out here right now. Which is, for this time of year, still a bit low.

Enjoy TAM, I really wish I could go… but I can drive by the Riveria and look.

  2. Casinos? New Orleans has casinos! We don't have big fancy rocks, but we have beautiful cyprus swampland (it really is beautiful) and we are definitely more of a sin city than Vegas. (Don't believe me? Mardi Gras is next month. Come and be convinced!) Why, then, is TAM not held here? :)

  3. That canyon looks amazing – is it just me or does the desert around Vegas look more tempting than the city itself…

  4. I always wanted to take the helicopter ride from Vegas to the Grand Canyon. I would love to go to TAM but teaching load along with some other meetings already on my travel schedule are preventing it.

    HAVE FUN

  5. I've yet to find them but somewhere in Red Rock there are cave painting thingys…. like pictoglyph or whatever. The damn trail the is supposed to lead to them has a giant boulder in the way.

And slash you are absolutley right, day or night the desert is sooo amazing.

It's actualy more creepy than amazing at night but still…

  6. So, while you people are whooping it up in Las Vegas (“can’t stop here, this is bat country”, etc.), I’m trapped in Somerville, Massachusetts, with my housemates keeping me awake trying to solve the airplane-on-a-treadmill problem. Will it take off? Won’t it take off? Let’s apply our mechanical engineering expertise and draw a free-body diagram. . . .

“The plane takes off,” I said.

“Are we sure that the no-slip condition applies? . . .”

“The plane takes off,” I said again, some minutes later.

“So this part of the wheel moves with velocity v . . .”

The plane takes off,” I bellowed, “because Chuck Norris is pushing and Jack Bauer is at the controls.”

That answered that. And then we decided that we had to tell the world.

    Thank you, and goodnight.

  7. “The plane takes off,” I bellowed, “because Chuck Norris is pushing and Jack Bauer is at the controls.”

I must be dense, because I know who Jack Bauer is, and I know who Chuck Norris is, but I'm not getting why this is supposed to be humorous, or something. :-/

Don't you have your housewarming party tonight, Blake? Will this be MIT gee..guys gone wild?

    Maybe you're a sedate bunch… (-;

  8. Evy, next year, we have to do Red Rock before the meeting (like Wednesday or something, or maybe even Thursday, be back just in time for the reception), just so we can do the long hike all the way around.
