Breaking: GOP Alabama Gubernatorial Candidate Says Evolution is True

Voters in Alabama must be made aware of a few ridiculous statements made by Republican candidate for Governor Bradley Byrne:

Evolution . . . [NOT GOD] . . . best explains the origin of life.

What the . . . OH NO HE DIDN’T

Parts of the Bible are . . . true and parts that are not.

Luckily his unnamed Republican opponents are spreading the word with a series of attack ads. You are real intellectual heroes, “True Republican PAC.” Keep Alabama safe from reason.

  1. Well it is Alabama… where they still persecute interracial and gay couples for trying to attend prom together.

  2. Thank goodness the Republicans are taking a strong moral stance against intelligence.

  3. If a fundamentalist Christian uses ellipses, count on it being a dishonest omission:

““I think there are parts of the Bible that are meant to be literally true and parts that are not,” Byrne said.”

  4. Oh noez! A Republican pol who accepts Evolution?? Put him on the endangered species list!

  5. @delphi_ote: Wow. I see this so often now, fundies & neocons taking quotes out of context using the “ellipse ploy” (and others). The thing is, they are almost always caught these days, because of the Internet and cell phone cameras.

However, they don’t care. Their base will still believe them, and will repeat their lies for them very effectively.

To the subject at hand: Did you hear the mocking derisive tone the male hick (H. Billibamus) used when saying the word “evolution”? Anti-science really is a virtue to these people, and therefore, by extension, to the Republican party that foolishly embraced them around the Reagan candidacy.

The problem is, of course, they still do very well in our elections.

  6. Woo, Deep South politics.

I’m guessing Alabama is a lot like Mississippi. the Two Party System entails a Republican, and a Republican that panders to the black vote by calling himself a Democrat.

  7. Not to defend my home state overmuch, but how many other states (in or out of the Deep South) have either Republican governors or serious Republican gubernatorial candidate who have come out in favor of evolution? I can’t think of one.

The stuff they’re pulling on Byrne is embarrassing, but it’s great that Alabama has a Republican candidate who supports evolution. I don’t live in Alabama now, and I am pretty sure I won’t have the option of voting for a pro-evolution Republican here.

  8. The statement about Biblical teachings and evolution is just another example of pandering to the base. The republicans have six candidates for Governor, with Byrne being the front-runner. Right now they’re going through a “I’m more conservative than he is” phase.

On the Democrat side, there’s two candidates, and the Congressman is being sniped at because he voted against the Health Care Reform law.

When the smoke clears, November is going to be a classic liberal v. conservative campaign. I’ll have my mud waders on by then.

  9. @DataJack: Creationists do this all the time.

It’s a pretty well known phenomenon:

    http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2006/12/more_creationist_ellipses.php

If a Christian fundamentalist points to any quote that includes “…” anywhere inside, you should immediately go find the entire quote. You have about a 99.99% chance of making them look like the dishonest assholes they are.

    Here’s how it’s done:

  10. Bradley Byrne also doesn’t believe that Jesus single handedly beat teh gay Nazis on the moon so that America could gain her independence from communist France, while writing the constitution and protecting Mary’s unborn baby which was Himself due to a weird temporal disturbance created when some evilutionist claimed that we were all monkeys. Byrne is a commie pinko.

    Mary’s true story

  11. As some who was born and still lives in Alabama, I have decided to bury my head in the sand and wait for Roy Moore to be coronated.

It least that way the state will make sense again and Roy’s Ten Commandments will be safe.

  12. Upon further review, it appears Byrne is backpedaling from his comments as fast as he can. So even if he is a secret evolutionist, Alabama probably won’t turn into a Darwinian stronghold any time soon, regardless of the election results.
