Darwin Day Artwork!

February 12 is Darwin Day, the time when we all pause to remember a truly remarkable mind that gave birth to a world-changing theory. In the past few years, we’ve celebrated with Darwinian Playlists, Darwinian Valentines, and of course the ever-popular Darwinian Pick-up Lines.

This year, we decided to mix things up by approaching a few of our favorite artists and asking them to create something inspired by the topic “Darwin’s Beard.” See the results after the jump! Hover to see artist comments and click to see the full size.

From Iszi Lawrence of Sundays Supplement:

From Box Brown, who draws Bellen!:

That death bed conversion rumor was all his beard's fault!

From Whitney Ford of ArchGrafix:

Ev

From Tawnya Mendonsa, who sells art and crafts at I Doubt It:

It is a single piece of paper hand-cut with an exacto knife out of a map of the Galapagos island, then painted a solid black on the back. You'll see several animals indigenous only to the Galapagos in Darwin's beard.

From Rachael King, talented sister to Skepchick’s own Tracy:

Flip:

From Rachel Maguire, whose work can be seen at Rayarray.com:

From DC Turner, animator of the upcoming Storm Movie (opens in new window):

From Brian (Skep-artist) George:

Title: 'Common Descent' Medium: graphite on paper Size: 18 x 24 inches

From Skepchick’s very own Surly Amy:

I figure if Darwin's Beard can travel for a show it's not too far fetched to assume his beard might want to travel farther off and being exploratory by nature the beard might just end up in space. Well, you can't prove it's NOT there, at least not some of it. And Rebecca Watson is in fact in space. (Rebecca Watson the asteroid).

Finally, there’s Skepchick’s own Tracy King, who completely misunderstood the theme and transposed a few letter:

Darwin's Bread

Rebecca Watson

Rebecca is a writer, speaker, YouTube personality, and unrepentant science nerd. In addition to founding and continuing to run Skepchick, she hosts Quiz-o-Tron, a monthly science-themed quiz show and podcast that pits comedians against nerds. There is an asteroid named in her honor.
