COTW and This Weekend’s Shenanigans!

Hey, who’s going to be in New York this weekend? ME, that’s who!

I’m very excited to attend NECSS, and I hope to see a lot of you there. The fun starts tonight at Drinking Skeptically, which I’m hoping to join as soon as my bus gets in around 10pm. The conference will go on all day tomorrow, and then you’ll all be able to go and get a bite to eat, and then start the partying.

Because I’m having dinner in Hell’s Kitchen, I’d like to continue to drink around there. So, how about The Pony Bar? I’m amenable to moving around, and so if you want to hang out with me at any point but can’t find me, check my Twitter feed. I’ll try to keep it up to date.

Sunday afternoon, there’s a brunch hosted by the Jolly Thirteen Club! I’m going to try to make it there, and so you should, too.

Other things going on this weekend? Post in the comments!

Okay, onto Comment o’ the Week!

Due to certain Dragon*Connery happening last week, I was sadly unable to post a Comment o’ the Week. The tragedy! I apologize profusely (but I’d do it again in a heartbeat).

This week, then, I’m faced with an overwhelming amount of quality nominations.* Plus, there was an entire thread that really deserves it. That thread is under Sam’s post about the Chupacabras: So Sad When Superstars Get Old.

Since there were so many worthy posts, including (as Briarking noted), the first four, I’m going to reach into my hat and choose one at random. The winner is…

So wait… is Larry Bird the Chupacapra?

Congrats, TeamBanzai! Your prize is to choose next Wednesday’s Afternoon Inquisition. Please send it in using our contact form.

On a side note, TeamBanzai won before, the day I first saw Carl Zimmer speak. Carl is speaking TOMORROW at NECSS! Coincidence??? Of course not.

  1. Congrats to teambanzai! Nice one!

Unfortunately I missed at getting tickets to the NECSS, but I might stalk the fair Rebecca tonight if things go accordingly.

Rebecca, I’ll be the dork with the goatee and glasses…

  2. Good job @Teambanzai!
I’m really excited to finally start meeting some skeptics this weekend.
Out of curiousity, who is going to be coming tonight/tomorrow?
FYI, I’ll be the one with the murderous kitten on my Tshirt.

  3. Thank You!

But seriously I never found out who the Chupacapra is, I thought Larry Bird made sense. I know el cacuy is a D.J. on a Spanish Radio station in LA. But the identity of the Goat Sucker still eludes me.

  4. I will be at NECSS. Not sure if I’ll go to Drinking Skeptically.

Incidentally, I have an extra ticket to NECSS. My wife was planning to attend, but she was sent to do research in Nicaragua after we bought the tickets. Anybody interested in the last minute ticket? First come, first serve!

The word “spam” is actually part of the address.

  5. I won’t be getting to NYC until VERY early on Saturday (have to take the red-eye bus!) so I’ll miss Drinking Skeptically…

But I will be at NECSS and various related shenanigans that day and the next, so it’ll be nice to meet some of you who I have not yet met.

I’ll be the awkward, tired-looking gentleman. No, not THAT one. The OTHER awkward, tired-looking gentleman!

  6. @goodguyseatpie If you don’t have a taker for the full day, I’m still able to come into the city for half of NECSS … I will e-mail contact information for me.

I have a wedding to officiate on the morning of NECSS so I will at least be missing the first half (or the whole thing if someone else takes Paul up on his offer), but I intend to go to the Jolly Thirteen brunch and the Drinking Skeptically tonight.

  7. Couldn’t make the other fun festivities, but happened to be in NY for the week. Hub and I attended NECSS and enjoyed it! Loved the live taping of SGU, and the only one that looked close to the minds-eye image I had of those podcast voices was Rebecca! Hope next year is a go, and that we can make it.

  8. Really enjoyed NECSS, unfortunately missed almost all of the podcast because the bus from Boston was stuck in traffic behind a bloody Thai Christian Parade in New York……I’m sure they organised it on purpose…anyone want to join my conspiracy theory… :)
