Quickies: Sexist AI

JVN on being nonbinary, and Hannah Gadsby

Alexa, are you making me sexist? – “This is all part of a bigger gender-bias problem afflicting the field of artificial intelligence. AI systems — including voice assistants — are being designed mostly by men. (In the machine-learning community, only 12 percent of the leading researchers are female, according to Wired.) That’s part of the reason these systems have been hard-coded to respond in problematic ways. It’s difficult to imagine a tech team composed mostly of women putting out a product that responds to “Who’s your daddy?” with “You are” — which used to be Siri’s response.”

Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness comes out as nonbinary – “It’s exciting to me that Jonathan Van Ness is using the words non-binary and genderqueer and gender nonconforming. It’s exciting to me that he’s still using he/him pronouns. It’s exciting to me that he’s speaking publicly in a way that’s complicated and messy with a fluidity in language to match his fluidity in identity. It’s exciting to me because cis straight people love Queer Eye.”

Hannah Gadsby calls out Louis CK for being angry and bitter –  “What the issue is, for a long time Louis C.K.’s comedy platform was that he was this hopeless guy bumbling through the world. And at some stage, he was no longer that, but that was still his voice. And I think he still believes that. He has not reassessed his position of power, and that is why he was able to abuse it. It’s difficult to see a shift in your own power and privilege. It’s not something we’re trained to do. He still honestly thinks he’s the victim in all of this.”
