#ClimateFacts Tweetstorm at POTUS Jan. 26, Noon Eastern Time

The Trump administration and some members of Congress are intent on misinforming the public on climate change and acting on these lies in a storm of decisions that will damage our planet, our economy, and our future, from withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord and moving forward with the Keystone pipeline to the gag order on the EPA, particularly on releasing TAXPAYER-FUNDED data and research to the public.

Scientists, science communicators, and supporters of fact-based environmental policy are taking to Twitter today (Thursday, January 26) at 12pm ET/9am PT to flood the @POTUS and @realDonaldTrump accounts with #ClimateFacts.

I also recommend tweeting at the climate-change deniers in Congress, especially the anti-science head of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, Lamar Smith (R-TX), @LamarSmithTX21. Other science-denying committee members include Jim Banks (R-Ind.), @RepJimBanks; and Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), @andybiggs4az. Additional members of Congress who are either scientifically illiterate or simply have no problem destroying our planet for profit are mentioned in Scientific American’s article House Science Panel Adds Climate-Denying Members.

Update: Add the House Committee on Science to this list, @HouseScience. Feel free to suggest additional twitter handles for climate-change deniers in government, and I will update this post.

Sponsoring organization 350.org “encourage[s] people to tweet not just scientific information, but the way that climate change will impact people’s everyday lives. This is also a great opportunity to share resources, presentations, and educational materials. It’s also a chance to talk about climate justice, environmental racism, and the many different intersections between the climate crisis and other important social issues.”

The tweetstorm has multiple goals:

  • Pressure the administration on their climate denial and get them to back off the worst of their climate gag orders
  • Educate the public about climate change
  • Generate media coverage, both about the administration’s bad climate actions, but also about the issue itself
  • Help with the pushback against some of Trump’s worst anti-science appointees, like Scott Pruitt at EPA, who still hasn’t been confirmed
  • Show huge public support for government employees and scientists who are standing up the Trump administration’s attack on science
  • Create a network of science focused organizations, individuals, and accounts who can continue to spread climate and scientific truth for the next four years and beyond

You can find more information and many sample tweets here (note: this is a Google doc).

Although anyone can join in simply by tweeting or retweeting starting today at noon Eastern, you can sign up to be officially part of this event and future science education and activism efforts using the form here.
