All my life, my hair has not been my own. All sorts of people had opinions and fee fees about my hair. Some folks would actually forget themselves, think they’re in a petting zoo, and get all up in my hair. I’ve been told natural is best, but straight is better. I shouldn’t dye my hair wacky color. Don’t I know short is more professional, but men prefer long hair? But don’t get a weave, unless you should. Only get micro-braids, except when box braids are the thing and never cornrows unless Marie Claire says they’re in vogue.
When I was young, this caused me all sorts of stress as I changed hairstyles to not draw unwelcome attention to myself and to conform to whatever the prevailing “standard” was. I since stopped doing this, going on six-ish years. Not because everybody has collectively realized that somebody else’s hair ain’t their business, but because….
But sometimes… sometimes… after getting told your hair isn’t “professional” or experiencing an intrusive hair pat, one’s ANASFWGTD wobbles. This is why seeing Dove’s ‘Love Your Hair’ ad gave me LIFE today. ENJOY!
