Quickies: SCOTUS, Jesse Williams on racism, and Pat Summit

  • SCOTUS rules 5-3 in favor of abortion rights in major Texas case – “The majority opinion, written by Justice Stephen Breyer, struck down the legislation mandating clinics have admitting privileges with local hospitals and requiring they meet the same standards as surgical centers.”
  • Supreme Court says no to guns for domestic batterers – “Domestic-violence advocates had feared that a ruling for Voisine and Armstrong could reopen a loophole in the nation’s gun laws that the Lautenberg Amendment was supposed to close. They provided some pretty chilling examples of the types of behavior that, if prosecuted, could have become exempt from triggering the gun ban if Voisine and Armstrong had prevailed.”
  • Jesse Williams’ speech on racism at the BET awards was on fire – “If you have a critique for the resistance, for our resistance, then you better have an established record of critique of our oppression… If you have no interest in equal rights for black people, then do not make suggestions to those who do. Sit down.”
  • Pat Summit, Tennessee basketball coach who emboldended women’s sports, dies at 64 – “Pat Summitt, who was at the forefront of a broad ascendance of women’s sports, winning eight national basketball championships at the University of Tennessee and more games than any other Division I college coach, male or female, died on Tuesday. She was 64.” From Donna.

  1. What Williams said can be so easily applied to feminism, too. Brilliant way to put it, really.
