Quickies: Gender bias in autism research, beer antibiotics, and Xena
- Understanding gender bias in autism research – “What I’m worried about is that because scientists and researchers and doctors and medical professionals are trying so hard to figure out what autism looks like in girls and women, they’re going to accidentally end up coming up with a gender stereotyped idea of ‘girl autism’ versus ‘boy autism.’”
- Scientists are taking apart beer to make the next antibiotics – From Alex.
- Proof of evolution that you can find on your body – This is a neat little explanatory video.
- Xena will be a lesbian in new reboot – From Michael.
- Cute Animal Friday! An elephant playing with a ribbon, from Mary. And an adorable bulldog hopping on a treadmill.
Lesbian or bisexual? Because, you know, Ares, Hercules, and several warlords she allied with.
Say, are they also rebooting Hercules: The Legendary Journeys with canonical Hercules/Iolaus? You know, like in the source material?
I don’t think they actually said lesbian (at least not in the stories I read) but Lucy Lawless has always been okay with the fan theories about Xena and Gabrielle.
I personally would love them to explicitly use bisexual, because bi so often disappears as gay or straight depending on the character’s current relationship. Since my daughter came out to me as bi I’ve been concerned more about representation, this could be a big step.
As for Hercules, well if they are going to do that they will need a different lead since Kevin Sorbo is a super-duper Christian and has been spouting all the nastiness that comes with it.
I’m pretty sure everyone involved in that franchise is too old now. But yeah, I know all about Sorbo’s bigotry.
Yeah, Xena gave plenty of hints: Gabrielle name-dropping Sappho every now and then.
The really cool thing is, when you have more than one LGBT couple, you can afford to make them more human. A character flaw no longer reflects on an entire community.
Amanda,
Thanks for sharing that cool science video on evolution and the human body with us.
