Quickies: Modern time, antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea, and in defense of not cooking

  • A brief history of modern time – “As the 19th century dissolved into the 20th, the nations of the North Atlantic struggled to impose their ways of marking time on the rest of the globe. It was an ambitious project, championed and resisted and repurposed by an extraordinary cast of characters.”
  • Gonorrhea at risk of becoming untreatable – “Gonorrhea is at risk of becoming an untreatable disease, England’s chief medical officer has said.”
  • Star Wars passes Bechdel test with flying colors – “Disney clearly did something rare for a studio and listened to the fans with this film, which recognises both the appetite for a movie that has the same feel as the original trilogy, and contains female characters that, while from another planet, feel more close to home than those in a lot of other action/adventure films that pummel the box office.” From Criticaldragon1177.
  • In defense of not cooking – “In a world where as a woman your best track to social legitimacy is to be one half of a couple, I already look like an aberration when I go to brunch alone, go to a concert alone, go to the movies alone.”

  1. This is actually the first Star Wars movie to have more than one woman of any notability; in all the older ones, the women are either the hero’s love interest, the hero’s family, or both.
