Quickies: Bigotry costs money, Pluto’s heart, and women in comics
- Why are people bigoted even when it costs them money? – “We need to make it a whole lot harder to be bigoted than it is not to be. We need to make bigotry more inconvenient, more time-consuming, more costly. When businesspeople say and do bigoted things, we need to make it result in a PR nightmare and some expensive lawsuits and a whole bunch of customers saying, “Screw you, we’re taking our business elsewhere.””
- Sudanese model Nykhor Paul: I’m tired of apologizing for my blackness – “Dear white people in the fashion world! Please don’t take this the wrong way but it’s time you people get your shit right when it comes to our complexion!” From Mary.
- A “heart” from Pluto as flyby begins – “After a more than nine-year, three-billion-mile journey to Pluto, it’s showtime for NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, as the flyby sequence of science observations is officially underway.” From Amy.
- Kelly Sue DeConnick is the future of women in comics – And her advice is to be terrifying.
Jezebel link? Isn’t Gawker currently being sued by Hulk Hogan over a sex tape?
Relevance?
I just find it a bit hypocritical that people continue to associate with Gawker Media when they publish revenge porn.
They published salacious celebrity gossip in the form of a sex tape, sickening sure, but hardly anything other web networks haven’t done. Other networks that are still seen as valid news sources at that.
From everything I’ve seen this was to further clarify other gossip not as “revenge”, which is journalistic whether you like it or not.
And it most definitely does not invalidate all stories on all of their other sites just as than every story from NBC News are not invalidated by Brian Williams.
I do get your point, I just think that each story needs to be judged on it’s own merits, especially when it comes to opinion pieces as this is.
Oh, ICT had two articles I thought Skepchick might be interested in.
Here’s the first, about violence against indigenous women I will add that some elements in the world of the internet have called Harper a sellout because he wants to use UNHRC to talk about…human rights.
The second, from Suzette Brewer (no relation), is about the Evangelical-led adoption industry’s attack on Indian children
There is not enough reporting on the plight of indigenous populations, period.
Here is another one I came across recently.
It’s disgusting.
