Quickies: Summer reading lists, men haven’t adapted, and new marsupial species
- Let’s talk (again) about diversity in publishing – Roxane Gay on how it’s not that hard to put together summer reading lists that don’t consist entirely of white men.
- Men adrift – “Badly educated men in rich countries have not adapted well to trade, technology or feminism.” From Ray.
- Muslim woman denied can of soda for fear she could use it as a weapon – From Mary.
- Newly discovered species of marsupial known for suicidal sex under threat – “The antechinus, a mouse-like marsupial, has stolen headlines over the years for its bizarre mating frenzies that are so intense, the males die soon afterwards. Now, two new species of the mammal have been discovered living in Australia’s south-east.”
There sure are a lot of defensive white people in the comments on that NPR article (an article that’s not even really directed at them as readers). How dare someone imply they might not be as well-read as they think they are?!
You mean to tell me that if I read the books the NYT tells me to read, I might NOT be reading the objectively best books out there? Impossible! I am smart and liberal, there can’t possibly be anything wrong with my reading selections.
The last item had me confused until I read the description and reread the link text. I initially thought it was about the discovery of a marsupial that engaged in suicidal sex when threatened.
That’s how I read it even after your heads up.
