Surly Amy Has a #SciArt Patreon Project. Please support!

I was so inspired by all of the art and science panels at ChiFi this weekend that I decided to finally try to reach for one of my big dreams. And that big dream is to start painting again and making ceramic fine art pieces that are heavily linked to science.

You only live once, folks and life is short. I know that this project may fail, but I’d hate myself if I didn’t try.

Here is a link to my big dream a.k.a. my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SurlyAmy

Patreon video transcript:

For the past 8 years I have been making handmade ceramic jewelry called Surly-Ramics.

My Surly jewelry line is inspired by science, nature, critical thinking and social activism. It has been a very successful project that I am extremely proud of. Over the eight year time-span I have created, by hand, over 17,000 ceramic necklaces. And one of my favorite parts of creating the jewelry, was the opportunity it gave me to get to know a lot of wonderfully brilliant, scientists and science communicators. These people helped me learn so much about the world around me. From the macro to the micro, the inspiration and knowledge they have shared with me has changed my life for the better, forever.

What I want to do now, is to take my skills as an artist and my love of science education to the next level, but I need your help to do this.

I love making art. It’s something I have been doing for over 20 years. But fine art isn’t something that can pay the bills and so it often gets pushed to back burner while I do other jobs to get by. But I want to change that. I want to be able to have the time to create ceramic work and paintings that are educational and beautiful. With just a little bit of help from you, I can do that!

The other fantastic thing I am going to do with this project, is have all of my art peer reviewed by actual scientists and science communicators! I already have enlisted the help of some fabulous people who have agreed to look over my work before I finish it to help me make sure I get the bits of science correct.

My goal is to create art that is educational, inspirational and beautiful.

I have a lot of great rewards set up for patrons who are kind enough to help me do this. I will offer behind the scenes looks at the paintings and ceramics in progress. I will let patrons suggest topics they would like me to tackle as well as suggest scientists they would like me to work with. I will offer digital prints of paintings, some bonus Surly-Ramics jewelry that are for patrons only and even the opportunity to own one of my paintings. I will share the feedback from the scientists and show any corrections I make. And I will share the finished art I create with my patrons before I make them available to the public.

Every dollar will help me buy art supplies, pay for prints and allow me the time I need to focus on the work. And remember, you can set your limits as to how much you are willing to give per completed project. My goal at this point, is to try to complete one scientist-reviewed painting per month but with help I may be able to do even more!

Help me follow my dream to be a more prolific artist and help me make art that educates and inspires for years to come.

Thank you!

~Amy
