Quickies: The “War on Boys,” Anti-Vax Intuition, and Hydrophobic Science

  •  Why Anti-Vaxxers Just ‘Know’ They’re Right – “It is not simply that anti-vaxxers don’t understand how vaccines work (some of them may not, but not all of them). Neither are anti-vaxxers simply resistant to all of modern medicine (I’m sure that many of them still take pain killers when they need to). So the matter is not as simple as plain stupidity. Some anti-vaxxers are not that stupid, and some stupid people are not anti-vaxxers. There is something more subtle going on.”
  • Black girls’ sexual burden: Why Mo’ne Davis was really called a “slut” – “Just as I was harassed at 8 years old, baseball wunderkind Mo’ne Davis is a target of sexual shaming. Here’s why.”
  • Super Slick Coatings Conquer Ketchup, But What About Ebola? – “But Smith doesn’t think LiquiGlide is the right coating for the job. The surface is permanently wet, he says. ‘It feels wet and leaves a residue on your fingers if you touch it. Over time, dust can build up on it.’ So the LiquiGlide works well inside a ketchup jar, inside a tube of toothpaste or inside the human body (think catheters and prosthetic devices). But it isn’t going to work inside an Ebola treatment center. For that, mechanical engineer Neelesh Patankar thinks a related technology could actually do the trick: superhydrophobic coatings.”
  • Neil deGrasse Tyson slams GOP climate deniers: “I thought as a nation we were above this” – “Tyson, who is the director of the Hayden Planetarium and, as a side gig, host of the hit series Cosmos, also stood up for NASA’s work studying climate change, which Cruz, as chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Space, is actively discouraging.”
  • Gay and Mennonite – “They vote on everything. They’re committed to peace. Can a church that defines itself by harmony survive dissonance over homosexuality?”
  • Fox News’ Andrea Tantaros: Campus rape investigations are actually a “war on boys” – ” ‘Outnumbered’ host spoke slowly to feminists: ‘It is a theme in this country to go after boys in this rape culture.’ ”
  • For ‘BoJack Horseman,’ It Matters If A Cartoon Dog Is A Man Or A Woman – “The storyboard artists drew the dog and the businessperson as men. Hanawalt changed them to women. Women never seemed to take part in the show’s gross, silly little sight gags, and she wanted to see them represented. Bob-Waksberg’s first reaction was that she’d slowed down the joke, and he tried to get her to change it back.”

  1. Anti-vaxxers aren’t…stupid per se. They just have the conspiracy mentality. It’s one of the most difficulty mindsets to break out of, because anyone who tries to help you is obviously part of the conspiracy.
