Bad Chart Thursday: Healthcare Spin

You know what would make this feature easy to write? Just basically reprinting every chart Fox News creates on any topic ever. Our own DrRubidium recently shared the latest, originally reported on Media Matters: the VAST GULF between predicted enrollees in Obamacare and actual enrollees as of March 27.

Fox News Graphic

Holy hell, would you look at the huge difference in size between those bars?! We clearly need to repeal the Affordable Care Act NOW and maybe just kill all the sick to make up for all the money we’ve put into this debacle in the first place.

But then it all gets really exciting. This week, the White House reported that with last-minute enrollments, the final number of enrollees was 7.1 million. Now, before you start thinking that this is in line with the predicted number of 7,066,000, allow me to illustrate the difference Fox News style.

ACA enrollment exaggerated

Considering all the people who are getting an extension on the enrollment deadline, such as for recent job loss, death of spouse, technical difficulties, etc., that right bar is likely to end up towering over the left and maybe even stomping on it with its enormous blocky feet.

Can you imagine if we actually had repealed it and begun killing all the sick in late March? Boy, would our faces be red, I’ll tell you that much. Although on second thought, I bet a lot of sick people were among the late enrollees because gathering all the necessary info and going through the online app might have taken them longer, so the Republicans missed yet another opportunity (the first being the slower death of the sick via preventing them from getting healthcare, although that is admittedly a more nuanced blame-deflecting approach to murder).

Now, before you get all morally outraged about me calling Republicans murderers, let me just point out that I am merely talking about the necessary killing of the criminally sick (and maybe the poor, especially where they overlap) for stealing money out of our pockets and inflating our premiums to the point where responsibly wealthy people won’t be able to get proper healthcare and will probably die. So it’s self-defense, really. But only if the Republicans have the political will to act.

So what’s it gonna be, Fox News viewers? Are you a Republican or a Republican’t?

  1. I just tried plugging in the numbers in to Excel, and it gave me the same bad graph! It started the axis at 5.4 million instead of zero making it look like there was a huge difference. I had to go in and change it away from the default. Bad graphs everywhere!

    1. Yeah, well, that’s Microsoft. What do you expect? There are whole freeware apps dedicated to fixing ‘save as webpage’ pages.

      Anywho, love the chart, Melanie!
