Quickies: The inflating universe, AVN loses charity status, consent, and humanism explained

- Evidence of inflation: Astronomers detect gravitational waves from the early universe – “Astronomers have announced that they have seen, for the first time, direct evidence of “inflation” in the extremely early Universe, unlocking an entire chapter in the history of the cosmos. It also ties together relativity and quantum mechanics in a deep and profound way, which has never been done before.”
- Australian Vaccination-skeptics Network (AVN) loses its charity status over misinformation claims – “The Australian Vaccination-skeptics Network has been stripped of its registered charity status because potential misinformation could impact on children’s health. The controversial anti-immunisation group was last week forced to change its name from the Australian Vaccination Network because it was considered misleading.” Very good news indeed! From Jack99.
- Hank Green on consent – The cruise missiles vs. kittens model is not good for anyone.
- Humanism explained in four short videos – What do you think of how they summarize it?
And Meryl Doery continues her lies in the ABC comments. It would almost be funny if it weren’t so twisted.
Yes, as many commenters said, I am amazed that AVN ever had charity status.
At the same time, I am ever so conflicted to see “skeptic” as part of their new title.
Skeptic with a k betrays Meryl Dorey’s US origins, which is funny on one level, but that spelling will always mean Skepchick for me!
I use “I went to the theatre to see La Bohème.” But “I went to the theater to see 300.” I use “grey” over “gray”. But yeah, skeptic is an American spelling.
Fun fact: You can usually tell how wrong people are by their obsession with defending themselves in the comments section. Also by their tendency to believe anyone who takes the time to engage them is part of the conspiracy.
I really liked the Steven Fry videos, short and sweet and to the point. Thanks for posting them, I have sent the link on to a few people already.
