Quickies: Women writers and trans* characters in genre fiction, debutantes, and Legion of Reason

- Amy and Rebecca on the Legion of Reason podcast – They discuss, “SkepchcickCon, how [they] got interested in skepticism and why you should go adopt a bunny.”
- Women aren’t just destroying science fiction, but other genres, too – Lightspeed Magazine had a Kickstarter campaign to fund an issue of sci-fi stories all by women contributors. “With around 30 hours remaining, the Kickstarter has raised over $41,000, as compared to a $5,000 initial goal.” So they’ll be doing a fantasy and a horror issue as well! From Killyosaur.
- The wonderful world of debutantes who dress like Martha Washington – From Mary.
- Gender in genre – On the lack of well-written trans* characters in genre fiction.
Could someone explain why the word “trans” includes an asterisk?
It is used as short hand to include non-binary trans* identities.
Just to add to that, * is often used as a wild card in computing to indicate a search for all possible variations of a word without restriction, hence skep* would yield all words starting with those 4 letters. I think trans* carries the inclusive meaning briefly and eloquently.

Wild, how did I not discover this until now? It was great to have you two on, Amy/Watson! I really enjoyed the discussion, even if I did little more than pop up at the end. :P
