Happy Betty White Day!

Today is Betty White’s birthday, and since I’m such a huge fan of the Golden Girls (and of Ms. White), I’ve been celebrating Betty White Day for the past few years. Traditionally, this is how one would celebrate a day in Betty White’s honor:

  • Watching an episode of the Golden Girls
  • Eating a piece of cheesecake (telling stories of your childhood in St. Olaf is optional)
  • Making a donation to an animal welfare group (Betty is a noted animal lover)

Watching the Golden Girls

Why do I like the show? It’s about the sex lives and friendships of four older women, which was (and is) a pretty progressive subject for the time–especially because the popular thought is that women (and men) cease to be sexual after a certain age. Plus, the show is funny and the extras are terrible actors.

I could no sooner pick a favorite episode than pick a favorite star in the heavens! (Why yes, I’m also a fan of the movie Ever After.) Of the episodes I can think of off the top of my head: I love the one where the girls go to LA to film Grab That Dough; the one where Dorothy auditions for Jeopardy and is rejected even though she dominates the competition; the one where Sophia marries an old family friend and all the wedding guests are Elvis impersonators (cool fact: one of those impersonators is Quentin Tarantino!); and the one where Dorothy’s friend comes out as a lesbian and has a crush on Rose.

Here are some videos of more funny scenes.

Cheesecake

Making a cheesecake is a herculean task (3 hours! I don’t even like to microwave something for more than 3 minutes!), but I picked a recipe that I think may be worth it.

I haven’t tried it yet, but I am intrigued by the sour cream topping and the homemade raspberry sauce. I’m a cheesecake purist—I prefer to leave out the cookies, chocolate, and most fruit. If I had more time/resources in my kitchen, I may have considered a vegan recipe, so if you have your own to share, please leave it in the comments!

Making a Donation

This year, I decided to make a donation to my local chapter of Animal Rescue League. Apparently, they work hard to adopt their senior animals, they have a sliding scale for vet treatment prices, and they even have a horse rescue division. If any organization was ever worthy of my donation, it’s this one!

Other Traditions?

I like celebrating my own holidays and making my own traditions, so if you have any suggestions for how to improve Betty White Day, let me know!
