Achievement Unlocked: $2,500 for Cancer Treatment & Research

We’ve reached more than $2,500 in our fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society thanks to you generous, good-hearted people, who are also likely to be geniuses and amazing dancers.

This means we’re all in for a treat from Mad Art Lab’s Anne Sauer, who promised to create a warm nonalcoholic beverage recipe to share with us once we hit the $2,500 mark. She is working away on it and will have it up this week, so be sure to check back.

Our ultimate goal is to raise $10,001 through the Skepchick virtual Light the Night team, via the Foundation Beyond Belief. If you can spare just $5, please donate to the cause. Every amount makes a difference in the lives of people with blood cancer. Not only that, but the Stiefel Freethought Foundation is still offering matching amounts, so that five bucks is really the equivalent of giving ten.

If you can’t afford to donate (or even if you can), you can join the Skepchick team. The team member who raises the most money (excluding Skepchick Network contributors) gets a free Surly! And if we can get 300 team members, Elyse and Courtney will wear giant light-up cowboy hats in the Dallas Light the Night walk.

It is super easy to join our team and it costs you nothing. Just go to our team page, scroll down, and click to join.

We’ve been offering and fulfilling various incentives along the way, including Rebecca’s first YouTube video thanking people who donated $100 or more via her personal LTN page. Check it out for more incentives for smaller donation amounts.

Sarah Moglia is also offering incentives on her fundraising page. If you join our virtual team and provide donation incentives, let me know and I’ll publish them in my next post.

After we reached $1,000 (and then $2,000), I created my first two superhero likenesses of kids in treatment or remission from cancer. I owe you 8 more (soon to be 13!) and will finish them as soon as I have more willing volunteers. (If you know of a child who would like this, please email me at skepchickevents [at] gmail.com.)

Here’s what we’re willing to do when we reach the next targets:

  • When we reach $3,500, Olivia will shave her head.
  • When we raise $4,000, Kaoru from Queereka will write a positive review of a comic or movie suggested by you, the more irredeemably awful, the better.
  • When we raise $5,000, Brian G from Mad Art Lab will draw a mash-up masterpiece that has to integrate ALL of your suggestions, no matter how unrelated.
  • When we raise $6,000, Avery (who writes for both Queereka and Teen Skepchick) will create a juggling video in which he will include your suggestions for what to juggle (non-dangerous items only).
  • At $7,500, I will dress up as a stormtrooper and do my laundry at a public laundromat, with pics to prove it.
  • When we hit $8,000, Kaoru will create a super hero costume, go someplace public, and spend several hours helping people in character. Suggestions will be welcome for powers, design ideas, and so forth.
  • If we raise $10,000, Rebecca will dye her hair again and you choose the color. (I suggest neon green.)
  • At $10,001, Elyse will spend an entire day out in public, running errands, while wearing a shirt with HERO on it as well as all her race medals (6) around her neck, with pics to prove it.

And of course, if we can raise $20,000, Todd Stiefel will shave his hair into a mohawk. If we raise this amount before Freethought Blogs does, we get to choose the color.

Unfortunately (for us, but pretty damn fortunate for people with blood cancer), the Freethought Blogs team is way ahead of us, having already raised well over $8,000. Greta Christina, PZ Myers, Ed Brayton, and Avicenna are also offering various incentives for reaching fundraising targets, bullying people into donating with their naked pirate blogging and bubble gum pink manicures.

So clearly you have a false dichotomy choice here: you support us or you support bullies and want to see PZ naked. Simple as that.
