Skeptics Under the Stars with Nicole Gugliucci

Imagine a magical place, where skeptics gaze into the night sky, lit only by the stars. A place where they eat by candlelight, drink wine and awake to a breakfast ready to be served.

I know of such a place; it’s called “Wisconsin”. And yes, the candle is more of a campfire… and the wine is mulled… over the campfire… and the breakfast is cooked over the campfire. And it does require tents and sleeping bags. But it comes with two nights of awesomeness with the Women Thinking Free. And two nights of awesomeness with the imitable Nicole Gugliucci, astronomer and Discovery News blogger. And one night of awesomeness at Yerkes Observatory where we will see amazing things with telescopes. (No… not THAT amazing thing with a telescope, you naughty naughty reader.)

It’s called Skeptics Under the Stars, and it’s our dirtier, longer, and a little bit colder, but way more fun answer to Atlanta Skeptic’s classy dress-up s’more-free pre-Dragon*Con Star Party (which you should also attend, really.) And this year we’re doing two nights under the stars. And even throwing in a free Big Foot hunt. For real.

  1. Also, if people want to donate to the grant fund to help pay for registration for someone who cannot afford it, there is a donation option at checkout while buying a registration.

  2. Bigfoot hunt? What’s this, the Pacific Northwest? Shouldn’t it be a Snipe hunt, I’m pretty sure Wisconsin is within their range.

  3. Damn. Wish I could come! Alas, the day job gets in the way… I’d even bring along the 4″ Mak and a green laser pointer.

  4. Dangit! This sounds awesome and I really would love to go. I really wish everything in my universe were not conspiring to all happen on that particular weekend too. Maybe next year!

    1. Next year? You do realize this star party is the same weekend as the apocalypse, don’t you? You need to get your priorities straight. This is the last thing you may ever do before everyone you know flies naked into the sky… and you should have a telescope when that happens.

      1. Judging by the apocalypse’s track record, I think I am safe.
Also, I have seen what the christian community looks like ’round these parts, and I do not want to see them fly naked into the sky. Ever.
