Friday Cute Animal!
A ladybug discovers sprinkles have SUGAR (and static electricity). My favorite comment at the Bug Blog: “It’s like a sugar-seeking Roomba!”
This is, alas, one of the Asian Ladybeetles that are causing issues all across the US. Still–CUTE!
I’m glad you mentioned the static electricity, or I would have thought Peter Parker got bit by the wrong bug!
I saw this video a few days ago, and it seems to me that the ladybug is trying to eat those sprinkles and frustratingly finding that each one is not the food it’s looking for. It’s kind of sad, actually.
Those ladybeetles invade my in-law’s house every fall. Looks like all they need to do to get rid of them is run a trail of sprinkles out the door.
I learned while pruning some roses that ladybugs bite. And it hurt! It is kind of fun watching one munch its way through a patch of aphids.
The video’s description still annoys me. It’s not playing! It’s trying to eat. To my knowledge no insects play.
I agree, it’s not playing. (and it’s not my descriptive terms!)
The person who posted the video says she is aware of that, and chose “play” as a term more likely to attract search traffice.
I thought ladybird beetles were carnivores. Is it trying to eat the sprinkles because they taste like aphids?
Aphids taste like sugar. Their poo is, in fact, concentrated sugar.
Try them as a sprinkle on cupcakes–it’s all natural and nutritious! (they do tend to wander off, though. That’s why you need to press them into the frosting a little bit.)
Yes, that was rather my point. (I’m not a professional scientist, but I do have a zoology degree.)
