Afternoon Inquisition

AI: Will You Be There?

I’m sorry Karen can’t come to the AI today. She is is currently hot on the tail of an international psychic who preys upon the innocent and gullible. Or she found some hot tail. I can’t remember which.

So you are stuck with me on this lovely summer afternoon and it’s perfect because I have a question I’d really like to know the answer to!
skepchicon surlies

Are you attending SkepchiCON, Any of the TAM events or Dragon*Con this year? Are you attending any other skeptical or atheist or humanist events? And if so how will I recognize you?

ps: I’m SO SUPER excited! I love skeptical conventions! Nothing makes me feel better then being surrounded by hundreds of adorable skeptics and the occasional stormtrooper! Woohoo Con Season is upon us!

The Afternoon Inquisition (or AI) is a question posed to you, the Skepchick community. Look for it to appear Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 3pm ET.

  1. I’m going to TAM London. It’s the first time I’ve been to anything like this & I’m going on my own so I’m terrified and excited in equal measure!

  2. I’ve never been to any convention, mostly because I’ve never had the money or the time. I’m optimistic about possibly going to Skepticon III in Springfield though, it’s not very far from where I am now and doesn’t look too expensive.

  3. No. But I’m hoping to go next year. I was hoping to at least drive to Vegas for a night during TAM to see the Skepchics, but unfortunately I don’t think it’ll happen.

I need to save better. :P

  4. I’m going to be at Dragon*Con. You will recognize me because I’ll be wearing tin foil on my head. To keep the CIA out of my head.

    So.

    Much.

    Fun.

  5. Whilst looking at yesterday’s AI, I got distracted by the TAM London ad and then got depressed that I don’t live in the UK.

After today’s AI, I’ve just spent a good hour checking out flight options etc. I’m in search of some inspiration: London never fails to cheer me up and being with 1000 other like-minded people sounds like fun.

However I’m new to the skeptic/humanist world (not that I’ve “converted” from anything, was just ambivalent before). Will there be other people like me at TAM who are curious about learning more, or is it expected that one has, e.g., read the entire Dawkins back catalogue?

  6. TAM London! I only found out it’s happening about two months ago, but already it feels like my entire life has been leading up to this single event.

    Well, no.
    But Yay London!

  7. I haven’t made it to a TAM yet but I’ll be at Dragon*Con again this year. I’ll be the geek handing out Tree Lobsters swag. :-)

  8. @Steve D: You were my Dragon*Con table buddy last year. Hooray for this year!

@Chate Noire: I’m SO excited for London! I’ve never been. Oh boy!

@nicamy: Oh my gosh, yes. Please don’t worry. Lots of like-minded people who love life and learning will be there! No required reading. ;)

  9. I’ll be at TAM and I look quite a lot like my avatar except a somewhat lighter complexion. I’ll also be at the Skepchick Bordello party so I’ll see ya there partner!

@Steve D: Is the swag available from another source?

  10. @Amy: Oh, most definitely! Right now K. and I are packing up for our move tomorrow and I think we started lushing out around 4 EST. By my clock, it should be 4 in yr neighborhood by now, so you will need to play catchup! Of course you can’t stop until after all of the cons are over.
    I fear for your life.

  11. We will be at TAM8. You spot us because we will be wearing some cool pendants. (of Tornadoes!)

  12. Ah! Unless you’re holding a con in Pittsburgh, I won’t be attending.
I wish I could go, but alas my student loans require payment soo I’ll be working instead of partying/nerding it up with skeptics. Hopefully next year I can join in the bonanza.

  13. Skepchicon, yes. The others, sadly no. But I tend to lurk in the background when I’m around people I don’t know, so you likely won’t need to worry about recognizing me.

  14. TAM London, Teh Second Coming!

[shamelessplug]Also, I’m co-organizing the first ever skeptics’ conference in Norway in October, which is beyond awesome and you all better watch out for news of it! [/shamelessplug]

  15. @Amy “You were my Dragon*Con table buddy last year.”: Yes I was! Thanks for letting me hide behind your table. :-)

@James Fox: It’s pretty much just stickers this year. I’m printing them myself so, yeah, only available from one source.

  16. I’ll be at TAM 8, Amy–and if you & Johnny come to our Drinking Skeptically event at the Silverado Lounge Thursday evening, you’ll recognize me handing out free DS pins and delivering t-shirts to the folks who pre-ordered them. The SurlyRamics Pigasus I bought in the JREF auction will give you a clue too assuming they get it to me beforehand.

  17. I’ll be at TAM Australia and I’ll be the purple sheep sitting on some hairy weirdo’s shoulder. He’s threatening to use velcro.

  18. I anticipate being at TAM Australia, I think I’ll buy a couple of T-shirts with my avatar on it.

  19. @James K: T-shirts with a person’s avatar is the best idea I have ever heard of for finding friends at a geek convention. Do we have an idea of the week? Because we should! IOTW!

  20. @nicamy:

You’ll find some like-minded people. The skeptical community is very diverse and while you’ll find a lot of people who read the same books and blogs and use in-jokes, you’ll also see a lot of people who are just interested in critical thinking.

My wife is a member of the latter camp. She’s not particularly interested in the skeptical movement but didn’t go to TAM London last year and has regretted it ever since. She’s skeptic-curious. She’ll be there this year, so you’ll have at least one person to talk to who isn’t steeped in the skeptical community culture.

  21. I’ll definitely be at Dragon*Con, and the skeptic panels are definitely in our schedules – I’m so excited about Randi being there!

  22. I will be at TAM 8, can’t wait! I will most likely be the only “Juniper” there if you want to find me. I am flying solo, so if you see me please sat “hi”.

  23. Thank you @Amy and @latsot for your kind comments! I also asked an ex-colleague who was at TAM 7 — he reassured me that newbies would be welcome.

In the last 15 minutes I’ve bought a ticket, booked flights from my current home in rural Holland, and reserved a room at my favourite hotel in the old Aussie stomping ground of Earls Court.

So to answer the question: I’ll be at TAM London! How to recognise me: will have to work on that.

  24. @Amy: Thanks, but in fairness I have an advantage since my avatar is actually available as a T-shirt without me having to custom order it or anything.

All I have to do is check to ensure the postage won’t be overly extortionate to get it sent down here.

  25. I’ll be at Skepchicon/Convergence!

Heading over tomorrow to check in/volunteer/etc…

I know I don’t post here often (I like to lurk… *shifty eyes*) but say hi if you see me. I’m the big dude with the sideburns. I respond to Cary or Autobahn 8)
