Monsters of Folk: Dear God Video

Here’s the opener from Monster of Folk’s self-titled album: Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.). It’s not quite as angry as XTC’s legendary Dear God, but it’s a gorgeous song with a similar point of view. Lyrics and more Dear God videos after the jump!

Lyrics

Dear god, I’m trying hard to reach you
Dear god, I see your face in all I do
Sometimes it’s so hard to believe in
Good god I know you have your reasons

Dear god I see you move the mountains
Dear god I see you moving trees
Sometimes it’s nothing to believe in
Sometimes it’s everything I see

Well I’ve been thinking about,
And I’ve been breaking it down without an answer
I know I’m thinking aloud but if your love’s
Still around why do we suffer?
Why do we suffer?

Dear god, I wish that I could touch you
How strange sometimes I feel I almost do
And then I’m back behind the glass again
Oh god what keeps you out it keeps me in

Well I’ve been thinking about,
And I’ve been breaking down without an answer
I know I’m thinking aloud but if your love’s
Still around why do we suffer?
Why do we suffer?

XTC’s Dear God

Sarah McLachlan’s awesome cover (not the official video):

Lyrics
Dear God, hope you got the letter, and
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don’t mean a big reduction in the price of beer
but all the people that you made in your image, see
them starving on their feet ’cause they don’t get
enough to eat from God, I can’t believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but I feel that I should be heard
loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
and all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting
in the street ’cause they can’t make opinions meet about God,
I can’t believe in you

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make
mankind after we made you? And the devil too!

Dear God, don’t know if you noticed, but… your name is on
a lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it, you
should take a look, and all the people that you made in your
image still believing that junk is true. Well I know it ain’t, and
so do you, dear God, I can’t believe in I don’t believe in

I won’t believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You’re always
letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it’s the same the
whole world ’round. The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody’s unholy hoax,
and if you’re up there you’d perceive
that’s my heart’s here upon my sleeve.

If there’s one thing I don’t believe in

it’s you.

  1. I used to play piano.
My family still asks me to play when I see them.
A large portion of my family is fundie xtian.
I have this recurrent daydream of – after all these years – finally agreeing to play, sitting down at the piano and banging out XTC’s Dear God.
It may be wrong, but the imagined family reactions get me through many a boring afternoon at work.

  2. What’s with the punk taking off his hat in front of the cathedral in Sarah McLachlan’s video?! Is this supposed to be a message “oh but despite everything, God will save you?”

For a perhaps more laudibly subversive and thoughtful message check out Emily Wells’ “Oh my God I miss you” (lyrics, song) .
