AI: Make your birthday Skepchickal!

I like balance. Let’s deal with my anger from the last post by making today’s AI fun!

Today is Surly Amy’s birthday! She’s spent the last week partying and enjoying life. I regret that I couldn’t be there.

But one day, we’ll have our island and we’ll celebrate someone’s birthday every day! If you come visit us on your birthday, we’ll celebrate it any way you want! The only catch is that your party’s theme has to be skeptical. Other than that, your Skepchickal birthday wish is our command!

If you could have your birthday on Skepchick Island, what would it be like? What would the guest list look like? What would your skeptical party theme be?

Happy birthday, Amy!

The Afternoon Inquisition (or AI) is a question posed to you, the Skepchick community. Look for it to appear daily at 3pm ET.

  1. I am wonderfully for anyone’s birthday but mine. My wife’s birthday celebration usually goes on for weeks. My perfect birthday on Skepchick Island, on the other hand, would be complete the amnesia of its existence. I just feel terribly uncomfortable being feted for continuing to breathe. Breathing sure beats the alternative, but it is hardly an accomplishment worthy of celebration.

  2. My birthday is during TAM, so a lot of what I would want to have there, is already there. So, I will say, for my birthday in 2012, I want TAM 10 to be held on Skepchick Island. And to last for a month.

  3. Well, I’d hope the Skepchick Island would be available in October 2011, because then I’ll be 42, and that’s a year worth celebrating with Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters, towels, a little personal abuse, and the Universe going foom. We’ll get this giant ebony conical bath, fill it with salt, or sugar, or white sand (it doesn’t matter) and then pull the plug (and this is the clever bit) and film it all spiral out the drain. AND THEN (and this is the REALLY clever bit) is that we’ll thread the film backwards! You see, so it looks like the sand is filling the cone! I hear that’s a marvelous way to relax….

  4. Well, considering how I just spent my birthday about a week ago. Any theme that includes the complete absence of mice, blank journals, flashlights, 20 year old TV Guides, canned goods, cranberry juice, and Sarah Michelle Geller is fine with me.

  5. Liquor and male strippers! (female strippers in another room for straight guys and lesbians)

If I had to have a skeptical theme to it, then it would probably “Doubting Around the World”. Skeptics from all over the world come, from the Skepchicks, to the SGUer’s (which aren’t already skepchicks), Reasonable Doubters, Brian Dunning, The Good Atheist, the Skeptic Zoners, and, basically anyone who runs a podcast. Derek, Swoopy, and Geo would would be DJ’s. (Does Swoopy compose the music herself? If so, she’s awesome!)

  6. Thanks Elyse! I’m toasting you and ALL my Skepchick friends with a delicious birthday cupcake right now! I’m toasting with a cupcake cuz I drank all the sake!

Hooray for birthdays and for skeptics! Here’s to another trip around the sun! Nom nom nom… :)

  7. Happy Birthday, Amy! You’ve prob already thought of this, but might you ever offer up your sciency stuff at ThinkGeek.com? I have no idea what kind of volume they require or percentage they demand…just seems like a good fit.

Anyway…For my very special skeptical birthday, I’d go with “Humor in Skepticism”. Of course, every skeptical friend and bigwig would be there. Honored guests would be those who do a lot of the funny…George Hrab, Tim Minchin, Mr. Diety, Penn & Teller, Mitchell & Webb…and many, many more. Importantly, I’d get to guest star in a Mr. Diety episode on faith healing. Oh…and there might be drinks, too.

  8. Happy Birthday Amy!
My birthday on Skepchick island would involve lectures on string theory and quantum mechanics followed by a vigorous ingestion of non-homeopathic refined waters while consuming non-kosher nutrition.

Or, we could skip the lectures and go straight to the beer and the bacon cheeseburgers!

  9. What can be done in a week and 4 days for me?
(For those playing at home, that’s the day after Valentine’s day).

I’d definitely would like Phil Plait, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, James Randi, and perhaps David Tennant to be there (would inviting the latter make me popular with the females of the group?).

The theme for me would be Skepticism and astronomy. I’d like to deal with things like the moon hoax, creationist claims that relate to astronomy (including the Earth), and astrology (we all know Tennant wouldn’t dirty his mouth with that!). And given NASA’s recent new direction, I’d want to speak about climate change.

And once in a while, we’d pause to launch model rockets, each one bigger than the previous, until we wind up launching a real Falcon 9. That, or a Jupiter 246.
