Skepchicamp Thanks You!

Thank you to everyone who has donated money to Skepchicamp! By now, most of you will be thrilled if you never hear “Skepchicamp needs money” ever again. Bad news: you will. Good news: you will!

Last weekend’s fundraiser was far more successful than I or my fellow organizers could have ever imagined. My goal for Saturday night was to raise $1000 for camp. By the end of the evening, we had raised over $1600!

This may seem like an enormous amount of money for a skepticamp, and, honestly, it is. But thanks to the unprecedented popularity of Skepchicamp, we need it!

This money is not just for the March 6 event; it also goes towards the future of the Skepchicamp organization. If all goes according to plan, by the time our 2011 event happens, Skepchicamp will be a 501(c)3 organization.

The planning team is still trying to figure out how this all happened. Last October, at our very first meeting, one guy asked about us forming a non-profit. I laughed and told him we’d revisit that idea in 5 years or so. 3 months later, thanks to the all the interested people, we had no choice but to do it if we want to keep this going in the future!

Our problems putting together this event are pretty great problems to have!  We have too many interested speakers. We have more people interested in attending than we have jobs to give them and space to seat them. Our $1000 budget back in October seemed huge, but that was when we thought we’d have 25-30 people showing up; now a $1000 budget is terrifyingly small. But you guys had our backs, and this event is affordable thanks to you!

Additionally, with 20 presentations planned for March 6, our speaker roster is 50% women! More women in featured skepticism? Easy peasy lemon squeezy! We’re doing it!

Skepchicamp is going to be the Greatest.Skepticamp.Ever!

Thanks everyone who has helped us fund this event! Hope to see you there!
