What a great week! We introduced the first ever Skepchick podcast, coordinated a nationwide Skepchick protest day tomorrow, and did a bunch of other rad stuff until today when we all ate a truckload of sugary pastries. Or, maybe that was just me?

Comment o’ the Week!

It was tough this week, mostly because Sam nominated an entire thread, proving that he is, in fact, a Commie. To his credit, it is a really funny thread, but as we all know, Communism only works in theory.

Instead, the award will just have to go to Andrés Diplotti for this post, which wins on nearly every level. Seriously, I don’t think he missed a beat here:

A spokesman for the Diocese of Bath and Wells said: “There is no such thing as a real gnome so why should we have such unnatural creatures in churchyards?”

Unlike gods, which, as everybody is aware, are natural creatures. If I remember correctly, there are three identified species in a single genus: Deus pater, D. filius and D. spiritus ssp. sanctus. The last common ancestor seems to be D. iehova, which was once found in Middle Eastern deserts but is now thought to be extinct (Nietzsche, 1883). It has been argued that they should be reclassified as Homo, since apparently they can breed with H. sapiens. But others have countered that such an occurrence has happened only in a single, poorly documented occasion, and furthermore, there is no indication that the offspring was fertile.

(Okay, there was one misspelling but I corrected it. My award, my rules.)

Andrés Diplotti, for such a wonderfully crafted and scholarly post, you win the Stokes Western Field Guide to Deities, a fully illustrated booklet beautifully bound in water-resistant leather, which also includes the patented GodCall Whistle for luring otherwise timid omnipotent beings into your line of sight.

* That’s Comment o’ the Week FOR THE WIN! for those who do not speak acronymanese.

  1. Actually, I was thinking of nominating that entire thread Andre kicked off, because it was pretty great. But I’m not a Commie. So I didn’t.

  2. Hahaha. Truly, that deserved to win.

Also, I totally wish that Stokes Western Field Guide to Deities was a real book. I would buy the hell out of that mofo.
