Skepticism

Coney Island This Saturday!

The other day I mentioned that I’d be in New York this Saturday and may do something fun. Well, the fun something is turning out to be a trip to Coney Island! The trouble? I’m not sure exactly who would be interested and where/when we’d be able to meet. Wendy and I will arrive via bus just before noon, and could probably safely be in Coney Island by 1:30pm. There will be much goofing off, a bit of filming, and plenty of freaks. We’ll be playing things by ear, so what happens after we have our way with Coney Island is anyone’s guess at this point.

So! Post below if you’re in, and if there’s sufficient interest I’ll nail down a place to meet in Coney Island.

On a side note, check out this very nice article in Vue, an alt weekly in Edmonton, all about your favorite skeptics. Steve gets some great quotes in, and I’m mentioned, too! Sure, there’s a typo in the web address, but I’m just happy to see some pro-skeptic journalism.

  1. I’m interested! Except. . . can’t make it to New York.

Hey, let me know next time you’re in Portland, OR. . . not the Warriors’ turf, but there are some drugstore cowboys around. . .

  2. Love me some Warriors!

And Jill, to their credit I emailed them about it and they apologized, and said they’d correct it as soon as they could. So overall it’s still a yay for them!

  3. Will Todd Robbins have something to do with these Coney Island hi jinks?

Sounds like fun, I can probably make it along with my sometimes-overwhelmed-by-drunken–crowds-of-skeptics wife.

Side note: I really meant to request putting this on the calendar sooner but I am a flake and an overall bad person– Friday night, Central NJ Drinking Skeptically — New Brunswick, NJ 8 PM.

  4. CORRECTION – we will be doing a LOT of filming at Coney Island, as per CNN’s request:

Hey Wendy, wanted to encourage you to send an iReport about Coney Island (like your great videos from the Cyclone last year)… to iReport.com. They might be useful to us. Either way, I plan to make use of them.

  5. Coney Island’s quite a excursion. Unless you limit the goofing around to 5 minutes. I’m skeptical you’ll make it there by 1:30. I’ll try to come out but that’s can’t say for sure yet.

  6. I am confident that Rebecca and I will be there by 1:30 – possibly already with fortunes told and palms read. We are that hard core.

A good place to meet (especially if it’s inclement weather) is the Museum, followed by the Circus Side Show. Then we must pay homage to the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone.

  7. I am happy to say that Vue has corrected our mistake online. Sorry for the mistake, but I hope you all enjoy the article. It was a thrill. And if you want to see more skeptical journalism, please let the editors know at [email protected].

  8. I have far too much to do this weekend to skip town, however nice it sounds. . . bleh. However, I note that the Overlords of ScienceBlogs.com, in anticipation of the site’s one millionth comment, are paying their bloggers to host parties. At least three of us Sciblings live in or around Boston, so. . . who wants to drink through ScienceBlogs’s money?

  9. Oh, it’s the second time you come to my area that I can’t come out and see you guys. Have fun at Coney Island Rebecca and Wendy, I hope I can make it to a local event soon.

  10. Blake, I will gladly enjoy free drinks some other weekend! You just name your time.

assaultofknowledge, thanks! I’ll second the suggestion for people to write in.

So, looks like just a couple people can make it, maybe? That’s still fine by me. Taking Wendy’s suggestion, how about we meet at the Museum at 1:45pm?
