Skepticism

February Challenge Results!

First, let me apologize. I had hoped to get this posted Saturday morning. Unfortunately, my family believes that there is life outside of Skepchick, and they insist that I am a part of it with them. If you will forgive me for caving to them, I’ll give you the February answers and winner.

The Pendant owner was, and still is, me!

One thing I want to say before I get to the questions/answers and results is that this contest ended up having an interesting twist for me. I came up with the questions myself, and obviously I answered them myself. For each question, I was looking for something pretty specific. What was interesting was that, even as a 100% non-believer reading the results of other 100% non-believers, there were times that someone would give an answer other than the “correct” one and I would be floored that they came up with that. I was tempted to give credit for hits in lots of instances where that actually were not hits. For me, it definitely confirmed that the people who believe in psychics are not just stupid or naive, and getting suckered by these people is quite easy. That being said, results are after the jump.

  1. Elyse,

I'd like it if you would say more about those partial hits that floored you. I'd love to know which ones worked. And why do you think they worked?

Since cold reading is a type of deception, it seems worthwhile for us skeptics to explore how this deception works.

  2. I have that phone dream too. I need to dial 999 or hubby's number, and I keep mis-dialing or the phone isn't working properly. It's horribly frustrating.

  3. Elyse,

You have my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your sister. That must have been a very painful experience for your whole family.

    Steve

  4. I dunno… by my count, it looks like I got more than two. Just because you didn't get the answer you want, doesn't mean it wasn't the right answer. ;)

  5. I didn't tell you to avoid vodka, I told you to avoid mixing your vodka with tonic for absolute safety. If you're a risk-taker, that's your choice, but vodka by itself is safe anyway – it's the cyanide you really need to avoid.

  6. for absolut safety?

    HA!

Rystefn, I just saw "avoid vodka". I screamed and ran out of the room crying. My husband spent 3 hours convincing me that it was okay to use the internet again. Even Sylvia Browne would never say anything so heartless!

Mike, unless it was Ron Paul cleverly disguised as Hillary Clinton preaching about the good of the public school system, I'm afraid I have no connection to Ron Paul.

  7. Yay frogs. Surely I get a point for that? Bringing my total up to a respectable ONE. 1 in 14 is, psychically speaking, nearly 100%.

In the bonus love life prediction can you tell us who was the most accurate?

  8. …and now you will remember my warning forever, right?

Seriously, though – don’t drink cyanide, it’s bad for you.
