Chicago in da House?

I was talking with Hemant over at FriendlyAtheist.com. Turns out, we’re practically neighbors! And there was mention that we need to have some kind of local get-together. The conversation follows*:

(*based on a true conversation… loosely based. In fact, any resemblance to any conversation, real or fictional, is purely coincidental.)

Hemant: Yo yo yo! E-money in da house!

me: H-dawg! What up!

H-dawg: Yo man, you seen those east coast parties? They off da hook!

E-money: Yeah, they sick.

H-dawg: I wanna get down on summa that action in Chi-town, know what i’m sayin’?

E-money: Word.

[awkward pause]

E-money: Hey, Hemant?

H-dawg: yeah?

E-money: Um, I’m a 30-year-old suburban mom. And you’re a math teacher. Why are we talking like this?

H-dawg: I gotta keep up my street cred.

E-money: You’re an atheist. And you go to church. You have no cred.

H-dawg: You’re right. Still, getting together with the Skepchick crew would be pretty fun.

E-money: I’ll throw up a post to see if anyone is interested.

If I put together something in March, would anyone be interested in kickin’ it Midwest skeptical style? And if you guys are interested, what location is best?

  1. I may be able to partake depending on what day and time. I live in Columbus, but I'd be willing to make the road trip.

    Word.

  2. I lived so close to Chi-town all my life and sadly have moved. Now I am depressed that I can't meet up and kick it :-(

  3. I also live in Columbus … but Chicago might be a little too far for me to be willing to drive. If you're expecting anyone from out of town, you should pick a weekend/Saturday night.

  4. Hmm, well I'd like to go, and I do technically live in the Chicago area. Sadly, I'm off at university in Canada right now. I'll likely be back there in late April, but don't feel you have to plan it around me.

  5. Hey! I'm in Chicago! I want to get together! I'll have family in town on the 22nd, but I might be able to make it.

  6. I also live in Chicago – I'd love to get together. The evening of March 22nd works for me.

  7. Wow. I live within a very reasonable drive of Chicago. But I’m also a suburban mom, so no promises. (but this is, nonetheless, very exciting)

  8. Bee- I live in the "suburbs" only in the truest, furthest reaching urban sprawl sense of the word. I haven't done any calculations, but I may be closer to Oregon than Chicago… so it's not that far for you!

  9. I'm a recent transplant to the south side of Chicago and I'm trying to meet skeptic/atheist friends. I found a site on "meetup.com" for a Chicago Skeptical group: http://skeptics.meetup.com/132/. They're having a meet up on March 22nd, 3 PM on the north side of the city. Might make sense to make it one big party?

  10. Sweet! Consider this the Skepchick/Friendly Atheist Afternoon Afterhour party.

I'm trying to find a place in River North/Loop that has good drink and vegetarian menus… because I drink like a fish but I don't dig on swine.

  11. Oh my god! I moved away from Chicago not long ago, but I may have to make the trip from Minneapolis for this! I've been looking for an excuse anyway… This way I can meet skepchicks AND visit old friends. Yay! :)

  12. I live out in the burb's but sadly I have a hockey game that night. It sounds like a great idea. Maybe if my planes change. Have you thought about "Goose Island" Great beer and the foods not bad

  13. Mar 22, really? You do realize a lot of us midwest atheists were going to try to be up in PZ's territory for the American Atheists convention, featuring Richard Dawkins this year. (Although, sadly, I'll have to miss both as that week is going to be very hectic for me in the labs.) (Sadly, my birthday is that week too, so it would be nice to celebrate… *le sigh*)
