Weekend Editing, Day 2 (+ UPDATE 4)

11:39am
Last night’s heart-stopper has finally been solved. The problem was in the clock — as I mentioned yesterday, there are a few different clocks to use. PRX wanted one clock and my producer wanted another — the clock my producer was on was the one that would work the best with my show, and a miscommunication somewhere along the line resulted in me believing that it was okay. It wasn’t. Panic!

However, this morning I called Izzi, our PRX suit, and got it all worked out. Originally I would’ve had to cut 3 precious minutes from the A section and add 3 incredibly long minutes to the C section, but we worked it out so that I only have to cut 29 seconds from A and the rest stays the same. Hooray, Christmas is saved! The only downside is that we lost some time, and now I might have to skip Steve’s lecture later today. Luckily, Steve lectures me all the time so it’s not that big of a deal.

Now we’re back on track — the 29 seconds out of A worked out well because that’s exactly the amount of time I wanted to cut out of a particular interview, anyway. Moving on to B . . .

12:27pm
Finished a rough cut on B and moving on to the last segment. B was simple because it is really just all one long interview that has already been edited to the right time. We had to put in my intro, a little break in the middle to reintroduce my guest, and an outro. The tricky thing is to make it sound like one continuous piece, as though I recorded it all today as opposed to some today, some yesterday, and most of it a month ago.

The fun part, once again, is hearing it with music. The happy surprise of all this is that I’ve been able to incorporate a lot more music by a lot more bands than I originally thought.

2:43pm
Still working on segment C. My producer Richard asked for an ETA and I asked John. John said “a few hours,” so I said an hour and a half. Which is 3pm. It’s easy for me, I just sit on the couch and say, “no, put an extra beat in there. Okay, now start the song there. No, the other song. Can you move that clip over there and OH OH, we should slip in this clip, that would be hilarious!” And then John magically makes it happen. So yeah, by 3pm? Noooo problem!

3:06pm
We did it! Sort of. We got a complete, rough draft of C ready to send off to Richard, with just some tweaks and one quick rewrite needed. Hooray!

9:29pm
HELLO SANTA! I’m eating ice cream. Rock on. Pictures to come.

  1. Panic a little.

    BUT NOT TOO MUCH.

These things rely on an extremely careful balance of panic! Too far in either direction, and you're DONE FOR.

    So no pressure or anything.

  2. OI! There are no coal mines in South Jersey!

It's peach orchards and blueberry farms. And the Pine Barrens.

…But maybe she could do a show on the Jersey Devil….(His name's Bill, actually. And while he's not "evil" in the strict sense, he IS a petty bureaucrat at an administrative services company near Laurel Lake.)
