Pete Stark, tomorrow in Cambridge, MA!

Pete Stark, the first Congressman to admit publicly that he has no belief in a god, will be speaking tomorrow (Thursday, September 18 2007) here in Cambridge, MA. Rep. Stark will be hosted by the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard, who of course I was quoted as bashing in the Boston Globe last Sunday. They write:

JOIN US FOR THIS HISTORIC EVENT, where Rep. Pete Stark will give the first-ever public remarks on his Humanism and nontheism. Stark is a senior member of the influential Ways & Means Committee, a strong advocate for religious liberty and church-state separation, a Unitarian Universalist, and a veteran of the US Air Force.

· Despite surveys indicating atheists are the group Americans are least likely to elect, Stark denies it takes courage to become the first ‘out’ nontheist in the House.

· “What is courageous,” he adds, “is to stand up in Congress and say, ‘Let’s tax the rich and give money to poor kids.”‘

There are many ways to be a true believer.

  2. And I don't know about you, but here in Europe, we use a different calendar that says today is Thursday 20 September 2007. Not the 18th …
