Goodbye Molly

While we are discussing the dearth of skepchicks in the news, I wanted to mourn the passing of a wonderful (if not officially declared) skepchick: Molly Ivans.

I call Molly a Skepchick mainly because she took no guff from anyone, and was fantastically funny. Her career began by making fun of the Texas political scene–and as a former Texan, believe me, there’s lots to mock.

Her skepticism was mainly directed toward politicians not wanting to bother with facts and analysis. In an editorial on the Katrina floods, she wrote:

“There is now a government-wide movement away from basing policy on science, expertise and professionalism, and in favor of choices based on ideology.”

She also had a knack for awesome quotes. Here’s my favorite:

“I believe in practicing prudence at least once every two or three years.”

I will miss her terribly–her writing was sometimes all that kept me sane in the long dark Texas years.

  1. Sadly, even as someone living in Texas who stays fairly connected to the news I had to get this news break from a blog, which is hosted out of Boston, MA.. in a manner of speaking.

Wit is one of the only things that can make politics bearable these days. Hers will be missed.
